Obviously a lot for one good season, but this could actually work out to be alright. In 3 years this could be a steal.

Tage Thompson and Jordan Kyrou are the same age; both had one great breakout year.
I have a feeling the reaction to this deal will be more positive than Thompson, but not sure why.

Seems like the new normal...guys getting massive contracts for one or two good seasons. Seems fair given that standard.

Sounds like the current fair market value.

The goalposts have changed from teams hedging their bets on how many good years a player has left in their 30's to hoping that young players coming off good seasons can replicate it and improve over the duration of the contract. Some of these young players will not live up to expectations but given their age they may be easier to trade than a veteran player on the decline.

Kyrou had actually 2 very good seasons:
2020-21: 0.64 PPG as a 22 year old, missing only one game (O'Reilly, Schenn and Schwartz were other STL centers btw.)
2021-22: 1.01 PPG
This is IMHO much safer bet than Thompson's contract.

.64 ppg isn't an over 8M player...I think it's fair to say he has had one really good season

It shows progression though, and long term contracts are built with a career arc in mind.

Kyrou = 47pts in 99gp before this season
Thompson = 35pts in 147gp before this season

Also I’m willing to bet that Thompson (a career 6.7% shooter before last season) has not all of a sudden discovered how to shoot the puck as well as Ovechkin. He shot 2.1% higher than Ovechkin’s career average last season.
Even if his shooting percentage drops to 10% next season and he maintains the amount of shots he takes that goal total would drop from 38 to 25 ish.

At the age of 22, with lesser ice time, it's good season. You just can't look at the points in that situation.

I think back to Pietrangelo. They offered $7.7mm for 8 years and he turned it down for vegas 7 year 8.8m offer which is same total money.

Blasted 2nd rounder for Brian Elliott in 2016 still irks me - who knows who we would have selected with that pick, but Kyrou was ranked right around where the Blues selected him by nearly every outlet.
e.g.
2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #33 by FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS
2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #32 by ISS HOCKEY
2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #28 by MCKEEN'S HOCKEY
2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #34 by NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING (NA Skaters
2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #34 by TSN/McKenzie

8x8 seems to be the new norm for young forwards with star potential

Some times it works out, sometimes it doesn't. I mean, it would have only been 1 extra year on Monahan's deal, and he was worth his contract for most of it.
