Dom Luszczyszyn lists 10 "worst" NHL contracts.

With that being said, here are the current 10 worst contracts in hockey.

I think this is the first time in years that a list like this hasn't contained a single Canuck.

Kind of surprised OEL isn't on there. The Canucks aren't paying the whole thing - but 5 more years of that isn't going to be fun.
(and obviously Lucic would be on here for the Flames if he had more time left).

Gotta think OEL just missed the cut?

My simple take away is that his model doesn't do a great job of accounting for Defensemen. Or players on terrible teams. Or especially D-men playing huge minutes on terrible teams.
Can anyone give a quick ELI5 on what is actually so wrong with Jones, Werenski, or Parayko?

I don't have the actual article, or the actual data, so this is just my best guess, but I'd presume it's fancy stats "value per $" type of a viewpoint. Likely some combined metric of goals for/against per minute per dollar... that's how I'd put value on a contract anyway.

I think there is some wonkiness with Dom's model over the long term.
If you look at Gaudreau's card for example:
I'd question a model where a guy has a season way better than he's ever had before.. but then is expected to not decline back to his previous 2019 (good) level until 4 years later.
Josi's got the same sort of deal and he mentions Doughty as a guy who was always on this list but had a good year so is now expected to keep that level up instead of returning back to the level he was in the years prior.
Just seems like a guy who pulls out a career season in his late 20s, early 30s is more likely than not to regress back to his 'normal' levels quicker unlike a 21 year old guy.

I immediately thought of Karlsson and I'm astounded his wasnt ranked higher, but that Nurse contract is genuinely that bad.
And I think he's the youngest player on that list?

I thought Werenski was supposed to be really good?
I also think Suzuki will come around and the contract is ok.

Werenski is 2 years younger.
Werenski, Suzuki, Nurse, and Parayko each have 8 years remaining (ie. their deals haven't even started)...

OEL having a big chunk of his contract paid for by another team definitely played a role in keeping it off this list. That he bounced back last season also probably didn't hurt.

He is pretty good, but hasn't played to his AAV yet. He is only 25 though, still time to blossom.

Dom attributes Gaudreau's 20 and 21 seasons as being dragged down by Monahan as he's mentioned that in the past. His model is based on Gaudreau not being centered by Monahan in the future.

Yeah Suzuki being there is a bit premature I think. He's only starting his new deal this coming year and he saw a big jump already last season in points. Think he'll be fine.

Good lord, imagine how bad Jones and Seguin must be for those contracts to be worse than Jeff Skinner's...

I'm surprised Bobrovsky is not on that list. He is overpaid and under contract for the next 4 seasons. Given Florida's push to contend, and arguably taking a step back this off-season in order to fit re-signed players under the cap, his contract is hurting his team's chances of remaining competitive.
