Going to be tough to turn him into any significant assets between now and the trade deadline, as he's basically stated he's going to Montreal, and Montreal isn't going to pay anything for him, since they're probably not expecting to be competitive this season anyway.

Tough to be a small market Canadian team.

Hopefully he has a great season and WPG can get a haul for him as a rental at the deadline.
He should be pretty motivated to earn his big pay day with MTL next summer.
PLD is set as the big trade deadline bait already, so that will eat up at least one of the prospect + 1st round picks from a contending team.

It is like the opposite of the paperclip to a house.
2016 2nd Overall pick - Laine
+
2015 25th overall pick - Roslovic
=
2015 3rd overall pick - Dubois
Something tells me they are about to turn Dubois into a late round 1st at some point this season. Not much else they can do.
Does Winnipeg go into a rebuild now too? It seems like they will.

I'm so confused as to what Dubois wants. He didn't want Columbus. He ends up in Winnipeg and seemed happy being able to live in same city as his dad who coaches the Moose. But now his agent comes out and makes a big point of his desire to be in Montreal even though he is an RFA and Winnipeg property. RFA's flexing is trending.

I think it’s pretty simple. He wanted out to a desirable city and asked for a trade. They sent him to Winnipeg.

Jets own his rights for the next two seasons I believe. Cheveldayoff like Treliving is terrible at hiring head coaches but he's a master of getting quality trade returns. He will get a solid return from the Habs. While it's easy to say the Habs can just wait two years for him and get him for free, the reality is that they will need to make space for him and as we saw with the Flyers and Gaudreau it doesn't always work out so better off to trade and start building the roster around him sooner rather than go the next two seasons with a half baked roster in wait for the player.

Yup, basically the same situation on tap for next year if they don't move him before.

Makes you wonder, even though you retain their rights, if the concept of restricted free agency is broken.
These players hold all the cards when they are star caliber and can hold the organization that drafted/traded for them hostage to a point where the team has to trade them for likely less value.

Sign them long term or trade ‘em. Extension as early as possible, or trade ‘em.
Players are looking to maximize their earning potential/quality of life, and teams should always be aiming to maximize the asset.
It’s only “broken” if you aren’t a well managed team (that includes realizing that yeah - things have changed).

I’ve been saying this since Matthews/Marner and every time someone said “well that’s an RDA contract so it’s different”. Not any more, not for stars.

According to CapFriendly his nationality shows up as Canadian and American. Plus he is French-Canadian, the trifecta.

Hope Montreal resists their obsession with acquiring French players and decides to not sign him next summer.
