I think Norris is quite a good player, and with the fancy new toys in Ottawa probably a safe bet to throw a contract like this at him.

Seems like it may be an overpay for his age, but could see this looking like a good deal in a few years if the cap starts to go back up again.

Senators won that Karlsson trade.

Norris scored 35 goals last year and he's still only 23. Sens are paying for potential and that he will build upon it. I think he will be a consistent 65-75 point guy in the NHL.

pretty much the same deal Robert Thomas got in St. Louis. Same draft year (drafted back-to-back, in fact), but Thomas has played in twice as many games.

It can be a really good deal if Norris keeps up his trajectory. Still young

Haha

That is risky, holy crap.

35 goals and not even a point per game doesn't usually get you almost $8 million AAV on a long term deal.

Really nice contract for an excellent young goal-scoring centre.

Was going through capfriendly. The Batherson contract stands out as such a great one.

On the flip side they are paying a combined 3.56 million in buyouts (50% of that Bobby Ryan, but also Del Zotto, Colin White and Dion Phaneuf)

I’m going to say like most long term deals this one will bite them. Very few players don’t get injured, and even if he survives not getting injured will his skills be up to par years down the road? Doubtful. Look at who the top players were eight years ago and see who are now and most teams should shy away from bothering with these risks. But I guess it’s the results at any cost that are putting teams in positions like this. Nuts. The duration is the problem.

They are betting on him improving as he ages as he's probably at least three years away from his prime. Nothing wrong with that as it's probably safer than handing 8 years to a 28 year old player and crossing your fingers his play doesn't nosedive in his 30's. It could blow up in their face but it could also be a bargain like the Draisaitl contract.

They did the same thing with Colin White and just bought him out 3 years later.

With the top 6 forward group they have assembled I’m sure Norris will continue to put up numbers and make this not seem like an overpay.

They are going to be fun to watch next season.
