Friendship ended with GAUDREAU.

Now MANGIAPANE is my best friend.

This is odd.

His agent stated a few months ago that he wanted to play hard ball to get Andrew to UFA as fast as possible and now this?

Maybe Andrew stepped in and told his agent otherwise.

Very odd.

Well it's a breath of fresh air to hear he's even interested in that option.

Caveat of course is if it's for an unreasonably high AAV then it's probably a moot point, especially with the Tkachuk situation still to be resolved.

Hopefully it's just a 5x5 type of deal that he's interested in. Some good $ for him after a career year, and doesn't handcuff the team as bad if he doesn't pan out, or price him out of being tradable if we nosedive into a rebuild over this next season anyway.

5.5M AAV x 6 years is my bet.

Did his agent say he is worth $7 million per as of now and it could go up if he has monster year? Maybe I read it wrong

Never heard an agent talk like this. I wonder if it pisses the team off. I would easily do mang on a long term if it brings down the AAV though.

Mang's agent talked about this: https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/big-sho...l-free-agency/

That would be amazing as I would expect he outperforms that AAV through the middle years.

Might have something to do with the Flames suddenly having $10M+ more cap space to sign players with than Winters thought they would a few months ago.

That plus a GM who always spends to the cap by opening night is now a good opportunity for his client.

Rich Winter says a long term deal with Mangiapane, if he has a 35 goal season again, is going to be somewhere in the $7/$8M AAV range.

My guess would be that is what is in the pitch for a longterm deal in Calgary. If the Flames are locking in Mang long term this summer I would guess we're looking at a $7M AAV. Winter also made an interesting point - if Mangiapane scores 35 goals this season, he'd be the only back-to-back 35+ goal guy to hit free agency.

Everything Winter says in this interview shows that Mangiapane and his agent (Winter) are very aware of his underlying numbers and how good he is, and also that he isn't playing enough minutes. Mangiapane is going to get paid either this summer with us, or someone else next summer.

And the fact that there's a glaring open spot (or 2) on the top line for the next couple years at least helps to justify a bigger contract I'd think.

Moves up the pecking order on the wing too. I think Mangiapane might be needed on first line to help Tkachuk and Lindholm in transition. Great opportunity for mangiapane

A player can look at Johnny leaving as an opportunity to step up and be the guy or as a reason to leave because you don't think the team (and you) will be as good without him. Sounds like Mangiapane is going with a) and hopefully Tkachuk sees it the same way.

Yeah I'm sure he's making a "pitch" at around $7M.

I'd be on board with $5.5M x 5 though.

Mangiapane: 35 goals - 55 points

Burakovsky: 5 x $5.5M: 22 goals - 61 points
Kempe: 4 x $5.5M: 35 goals - 54 points

Both those guys numbers last year are pretty comparable and right in line with what you'd expect for Mangiapane.

Better do it now because at this point he stands to be the left shot winger who is going to eat up a lot of Gaudreau's minutes and if he has another year like the last one (or better) he will cost a fortune then.

Uh oh. I don't like this. An agent trying to get in front of the public conversation when no one asked for a comment? Seems like a negotiating tactic when things aren't going well.

Just my opinion.
