With Kassian gone and Keith retired that’s about 9MM in cap room?

So a screw you to the Hawks, and helps the Oil.
What a stupid part of the CBA.

What I feared, especially after Chicago's fire-sale yesterday. Edmonton gets the cap space plus some silly "bonus" cap now, at the expense of Chicago (who is clearly in a re-build and won't care).
**** off Keith.
EDIT: I stand corrected -- I guess the Oilers don't get the extra "credit" after all? https://theathletic.com/3365644/2022...-duncan-keith/
Quote:
The million-dollar question, or in this case, the multimillion-dollar question is how much could the Blackhawks and/or Oilers owe if he retired. Let’s begin by dispelling the idea the Oilers could be given a $3.4 million cap credit if Keith retired.
“No, there is no concept of a ‘cap credit’ for current teams that may lose a player to retirement,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote in an email Tuesday.
The NHL’s CBA wording can be complicated, and that’s where the discrepancy seems to be with whether a team in the Oilers’ position might receive additional cap space. There are mentions of “cap advantage” in the CBA, but those are referring to a team benefiting from how the contract was structured. The Oilers were told at the time of acquiring Keith that they would gain only Keith’s cap hit and not receive an additional cap credit at any point if the blueliner retired.

Right now the league has said the Oilers will be getting no cap recovery from the retirement. The Oilers will have to appeal to get it.
IMO they likely will.

Congrats on an amazing career. Those years in Chicago he was a robot and a damn good defenseman. He was one of the big 3 with Kane and Toews.
Last season I thought he had a decent year and was better than I expected. He was good in the playoffs. For this upcoming year, the 5.54 M in space is valuable.
Best of luck in retirement and congrats on a 1st ballot Hall of Fame career!

I don't think they will
There is nothing in the CBA that says anything about cap recapture benefits. Only penalties.

Yeah it was some thing that ############ started to mention on their site.
But in the actual CBA there is nothing, and Daly had already stated no.
The other teams in the league would be pretty angry if another team was able to sneak extra cap space.
