Default Penguins re-sign Rakell to 6 year deal (5 million AAV)

https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/rickard...-penguins/?amp

Rikard Rakell had 13 points in 19 games after being acquired by the Penguins last year (41 points in 70 games split between Pens and Ducks) 29 years old currently.

Had back to back 30+ goal seasons in 2016/17 and 2017/18

Not a very good looking deal at all. Why are they penny pinching Malkin out of town?

Because Rakell is 29 and a scoring winger they need, Malkin is old and wants a long term deal at a higher AAV

That feels like a lot.. of $, or length, or both.

Paying for potential for him to continue to put up as Crosby and/or Malkin decline (or leave)

They are still paying Zucker 5.5 million/yr. He had 17 points in 41 games last year and 18 points in 38 games the year before that.

A bird in the hand I suppose, but they might have been better with Kessel at half of that…at least he tends to stay healthy

Yeah this would have been a great deal for Rakell once upon a time...but with his injury history and recent production this feels like an overpay.

What am I missing here? The guy has been trending in the wrong direction since 2017/18. I would think 4 years would be the absolute max you would want to commit to him and even that seems like a bit much but 6 years? Horrible!

GMs making trades and their sunk cost fallacy.
See Philly and Ristolinen as well.

Rakell always seemed to be a Flames killer with the Ducks.

Hextall signed all the ####ty contracts that the Flyers have. Terrible GM like Ken Holland who always pays too much.

Burke gambling hard with that deal. Personally don’t have a high opinion of Rakell. Best case is he lives up to that contract. Thank God he’s not near the organization anymore.
