I think he would be a James Neal replacement. I would pass myself, which probably means we are in on him if we don’t sign Johnny.

Agreed, if the Flames need a backup plan.

Kadri is not within the backup plan

Signing Kadri as a UFA would be expensive and the term would be long.

If we lose Johnny and sign Kadri he’ll be 35 before we make the playoffs again

Age is a factor as he's probably got 2-3 really good years left which makes this one hard to gauge in terms of contract length. In the case Johnny leaves I'm sure Treliving will be talking to his agent but I think you have to be cautious here because he's a 2nd line center and on another team will revert back to being a 50 point player. Bonus would be that Backlund could move down to 3rd line and center depth would be the best it's been in a while but Treliving would need to add another winger to replace some of Gaudreau's offense. I hope it doesn't get to the point where Treliving reverts to plan B but the team is still going to try and win so hope for the best I guess.

If we lost Gaudreau and signed Kadri I would puke.

He's 32.

I'd rather the Flames go after Trocheck

He vetoed a trade to the Flames. He’s not even an option

I don't believe Kadri wants to play here which means the Flames would have to grossly overpay to get him. Not happening IMO.

Roof Daddy mentioned Trocheck and that's a name that fits better and even Steinberg mentioned mutual interest.

No kidding; if we lose Gaudreau for nothing the last place I’d want to see them try to ‘fix’ that is the UFA market especially if it meant overpaying for a player who’s already 31 and coming off a career year by a lot. Probably the scariest moments in a long time for Flames fans are the next 3 days… unless of course Johnny just reups already!!! Man this has felt like a full off-season and we haven’t even hit the dog days yet lol.

It isn't even that age is the only factor. He literally doubled his production this year at age 31.

There is a zero chance he replicates anything close to this on the Flames.

If the Flames lose Gaudreau and replace him with Kadri on a 7 year deal, we will be in big trouble for a long time.

It’s mortifying to consider… fingers are almost broken from how firmly they’ve been crossed through all this. I keep telling myself that Johnny loves Darryl and values winning which he would undoubtedly have a better chance to do in the prime of his contract if he stays in Calgary so ultimately I’m hoping those outweigh his desire to have a closer proximity to his family… this is becoming extremely nerve racking as the deadline looms closer.

Hard pass. It’s going be too much money for too little productive time. Player has attributes as a complementary piece, as he was in Denver and Toronto, but not as a centrepiece player (but would be paid as one).

He's a helluva player.
Would depend highly on the term.
But I'm a big fan. Him and Tkachuk together would be a proper pain in the rear for other teams.

^^All of this.

The only chance Kadri has at duplicating production from this past season would be to have a winger of the ilk of Johnny. Obviously ain't happening.

I want nothing to do with paying a 32 year old on a long term deal after a massive career season. Is he coming in under 5 years and under $6M I am game but he is looking for 6-7 years at 7-8M and that is a contract that will be regretted

He only vetoed because he didn’t want to leave his hometown. I don’t think he has anything against Calgary. If the Flames had a great offer I’m sure he would consider it.

With that being said no thank you

Kadri at the 7.5 to 8.5 I think he’ll get offered in UFA market would sewer this teams future. Maybe they’re good enough to make the playoffs in years 1 and 2 of the contract but I don’t think they’d be good enough to make noise. If Johnny does elect to leave I really hope the Flames don’t panic and make reactionary pivots but I doubt that would be the case. Not fun to consider the alternatives to losing Johnny to UFA…
