at first I thought, phew a club that Kevin Lowe isn't already a part of..but nope Kevin Lowe, Bob Nicholson and Ryan Smyth are already in this club (along with Messier and Gretzky of course)

its an interesting set of names actually- of course strongly based on international competition as well as other thoughtful contributors

edit: you need to be retired for 5 seasons to qualify- looks like they waived that minimum waiting period for Ryan Smyth which seems a bit much but what do I know

It's more of a Hockey Canada thing. Although Jean Beliveau never played for a Team Canada.

Maybe it's for those who show up for the golf tourney?

understood- which is why I picked names above that have distinguished themselves in some way internationally (as well as in the NHL), in many or most cases more than either Lowe or Lafleur for that matter

he has played more games for Canada at the WHC than anyone else based on my primitive searching skills. Ryan O'Reilly is next

guys that have outscored Smyth include Heatley, Yzerman, O'Reilly, Doan, Dionne, Eberle, Duchene, Spezza and Jack McLeod (DOB 1930)

edit: Marcel Dionne was like Ryan Smyth before there was Ryan Smyth (obviously a different and better player but went to worlds all the time because the Kings were done)

Nobody can argue that the Oilers have had their share of HOF players over the years but it kind of grinds my gears that Smyth and Lowe are so massively overrated.

Congratulations Lanny! He was my favorite player growing up, the only signed rookie card I own and became the blueprint for all my other favorite Flames.

It does sound a little too contrived a title, doesn't it? Like, they can't bestow "Order of Canada" that is the next best thing.

Just call it "Hockey Canada Hall of Honour" or something like that.

So Marek had Lanny on this morning talking about his latest honor.

Then he brings up the commercial he and Brian Glennie did in the late 70's which triggered my memory.

Yup as bad as it was cheesie and it ran for like a year.

So bad it's hilarious.
