Go, team! Still feels weird watching hockey with no particular stake in the outcome. Avs do have Makar, though...go, Avs!

Doesn't the helmet off a goalie stop play or is that a judgement call?

I'm guessing it's judgement call and because there was an almost sure goal on the rebound, play was allowed to go on? I imagine if Kuemper managed to kick it out into the corner, the play would have been whistled down.

Definitely a bit odd there with regards to letting the play continue. I thought the rule was to blow it dead right away but I guess not.

How can they count that goal. I thought the whistle was supposed to blow as soon as a goalie loses his mask.

Interesting: "The only piece of goalie gear that can stop play is the mask. In the NHL, play is stopped when a goaltender loses his mask, as long as his team has control of the puck or if there's no “immediate and impending scoring opportunity” for the opposing team (Rule 9.6)."

i. If a goaltender is hit in the facemask by a shot during game action, the referee may stop play if there is no immediate scoring chance.
ii. If a goaltender’s facemask comes off during game action with his team in possession of the puck, the referee will stop play immediately.
iii. If a goaltender’s facemask comes off during game action with the opposing team in possession of the puck, the referee will stop play if there is no immediate scoring chance.
iv. If a goaltender’s facemask comes off during game action and the puck enters the goal net before the referee blows his whistle to stop game action, the goal will count.
v. If the puck hits a goaltender’s facemask and goes into the goal net, the goal will count.

Billy Jaffe on the national radio feed thoroughly explained why the goal counted as active stick posted. Good jobe by the referee Sutherland to explain to Kuemper on the goal.
The Lightning are doing a good job from allowing the Avalanche to get any flow going.
