Default Radon venting question

My neighbour has just installed a radon venting system and the vent pipe exits at ground level and about 8 feet from my aircon unit. Anyone know the building refs on this? Is that safe?

Aircon units don't usually exchange air from outside to inside, so I'm guessing it's just fine.

Fair point. However, I was just looking at some examples online (seemed to be US) and all vents had to be at elevation. Seemed odd that a ground level vent would be ok compared to that.

It would be in such low levels because its a constant positive air pressure system that as soon as it hit the outside air it would disperse.

it would dissipate so quickly in the open air. I don't think it would matter if you had an intake fan where your AC is. You're good.

Easy to think of it this way: radon is in the ground. If it’s coming into a house, it’s probably coming out of the ground (therefore… at ground level) around the house anyway. So a vent that moves it from inside the house to outside where it already is ain’t gonna make a difference.

The reason it doesn’t matter outside is because as others said it dissipates quickly. So unless your neighbour it pumping it directly into your house with a sealed hose, you’re fine.

Radon Venting thread?

Missed opportunity to title it: "Radon Thoughts Thread"

That would have thrown some people.

If your neighbor is venting radon you better check your basement also.

It's pretty random in Calgary but it's best to be safe than sorry.

Lost a relative to lung cancer to this in Penticton. One of my friends in Edgemont had insane levels in his house. He's had pneumonia a few times already so not a good sign.

There might be a concern...

Quote:
EPA disallowed ground level discharge of radon primarily because of the potential for re-entrainment of the gas into the house and because of the possibility of children being exposed to high radon levels. The concentration of radon gas at the discharge point can be tens of thousands of picocuries per minute.

Health Canada allows ground level venting.
