If You Could Undo One Treliving Move & Replace it With A Similar One
Hypothetical, of course...
Trying to keep the replacement transaction fairly realistic. In the following example it's a different dman from the same team. One can dream...
My example:
*UNDO:
TRAVIS HAMONIC Trade:
2017-Jun-24 Traded from New York Islanders with conditional round 4 pick in the 2019 draft (Lucas Feuk) to Calgary Flames for round 1 pick in the 2018 draft (Noah Dobson), round 2 pick in the 2018 draft (Ruslan Iskhakov) and conditional round 2 pick in the 2019 draft (Samuel Bolduc)
*REPLACE:
DEVIN TOEWS
2020-Oct-12 Traded from New York Islanders to Colorado Avalanche Calgary Flames for round 2 pick in the 2021 draft (#59-Janis Moser) and round 2 pick in the 2022 draft

Probably target someone other than Jarnkrok for depth. He just didn’t fit in here.

That's tricky. It's a three year gap. Should the Flames have stood pat for 3 years? They were trying to improve with Hamonic.

Agreed. Should have been able to get David Perron, who signed 4x4 that same offseason, for probably less than the Neal offer.

Hamonic was the biggest blunder. Massive overpay for an incredibly mediocre player. Flames could have Noah Dobson plus had a lot more flexibility in making trades having those seconds back. This deal was supposed to turn the wildcard, first round swept team into contention. Flames would miss in year 1, lose in the first round in year 2, and Hamonic would bail on the team in year 3 not playing in the bubble. The Flames likely could have taken a more serious run at O’Rielly or Dubois, or other deals had they not spent a top pairing trade price on a bottom pairing Dman. Both Brodie and Hanifin benefited greatly when they were given new partners after playing with Hamonic.
I will say for a replacement deal the failed Kadri trade would have been nice. Kadri would have been a help in the playoff runs in 20, and 22. Having Kadri would have also made it easier to pull off one of the rumored Monahan deals that didn’t happen before his value tanked.

Hamonic and Neal for sure.
Don't even need a similar deal, just do nothing.

Come on guys, we know the biggest issue here the past 7 years.
Instead of hiring Gulitzan, grabbing an actual top tier coach.
Imagine a world where Gullible Gulitzan never wasted years of development.
Honorable mention to instead of having Elliott, signing a real goaltender.

But for player moves, I always go back to the 2018 summer.
I don't know how involved Treliving was in the ROR talks, but I wish he would have been more aggressive there. If he snaps up ROR that summer then he doesn't have the cap space (or top 6 need) to go out and sign "The Real Heel" James Neal.
That fricken team finished 2nd overall that season with Neal being a useless POS whiner. Imagine what they do with ROR instead...

Hamonic for sure. Giving up those type of assets for that player and for that team that was not competitive for the Cup was awful. It was awful at the time and even worse with hindsight.

Tree rec9vered brill8antly from the Neal debacle. Overpriced or not Lucic has been a rock solid fit with the Flames and I cannot think they'd matured the way they did without him. So while the Neal deal itself was horrible, it was salvaged. So I'd let that one sit.
The Brouwer contract, that's up there. He just blew chunks as a Flame and it really sucked. But, is what it is and not his worst act by a long shot.
Like others have posted already. Undo the Hamonic trade, it's was pure garbage from the get go and the Flames really lost so much from it. So much. We don't know how they would have drafted or used the picks another way but man that Hamonic trade reeks to high heaven to this day. There's no way around it. It set the club back.
Honorable mentions to the Bennett debacle. I for one feel he would have flourished under Sutter. They could have given him one more year to see if that was the fix. Ah well. Water under bridge etc.
Another HM is the Gulutzan hire. I understand the Peters hire as he had a positive effect out of the gates but the Gully hire might be as bad as the Hamonic trade. Actually, firing Hartley for Gully . A double kick in the balls on that maneuver.

I think there's a fit on the Flames for the right price. But move him to RW. Think he could do for Monny what Lindy did when they were linemates and take the right side faceoffs.
Plus he can be the guy who digs the pucks out of the corners on the forcheck and letonny set up naturally in his spot.
Yes, I think Monny stays with the Flames.

Fun fact, if two years prior he had signed Perron to a three+ year deal, he could have avoided not only the neal signing but the brouwer signing

Yeah Hamonic, but I don’t think you can replace him with a 2019 trade for Toews.
But same year, NJD acquired Vatanen, who is a RHD, though retained not the same mode as Hamonic. Pittsburgh got Oleksiak.
TBF, it was kind of a limited trade offseason because of expansion draft. Everyone had to wait until Vegas was done. They got Theodore, but if Calgary got Theodore before the draft, Vegas just takes him.

That is where I think the Hamonic trade enters the chat again. That deal coupled with the Lazar and Smith trades took away 5 draft picks that made it tough to part with more. The Flames would have been hard pressed to match the Blues offer that included Tage Thompson who was a 1st in 2016, a future 1st+2nd and cap dumps. The Flames likely could have put together a package that included similar pieces had they not traded such premium assets for Hamonic.
