Taller than the current one and narrow face, sort of like the original Garfield in the late 70s.
Plus this Harvey had to skate.

It's like Grandpa Harvey.

The way my sister in law tells it, some guy came into her mom's arts and crafts store in the 80's desperate for red fabric to finish up a mascot he was debuting to the Flames the next day. Her mom claims the long floppy tongue was her idea, though I'm guessing that might just be a touch of embellishment

Cocaine papered over a lot of cracks in the 80s.

As I understand it, Harvey wasn't something planned, at least not by the team. I don't know if this is right, but I remember hearing that basically the guy who was Harvey showed up with an outfit and talked someone in the organization into giving it a shot, that it was completely driven by this random dude that decided the team needed a mascot. Again, not sure if this is correct, but same source said that he was the first NHL mascot.

He may have looked weird, but the original Harvey was a phenomenal athlete. He WALKED on top of the glass, was as acrobatic as they come and had personality in spades. By comparison the current one is a bore, and has been for the past 20 years or so, since the original guy retired.

The original creator and Harvey is a guy named Grant Kelba, this is from 2019:
Quote:
Grant Kelba was 23 years old. He had already spent four years dressing up as Ralph the Dog for the Calgary Stampeders when he was introduced to the Flames, who were moving into a new arena called the Saddledome.
They were thinking about creating a team mascot, and had reached out to the mascot consultant community to come up with something memorable.
"They put a bunch of proposals in front of me, about six to eight inches high, and they said, so how does yours differ?" Kelba said in an interview Wednesday with David Gray on the Calgary Eyeopener.
Kelba told them, "I tell you what. Let me build it and just show up. I'll take all the risk. I'll take all of the issues, and if it doesn't work, you can just let me go and you're not stuck with a $4,000 costume."
The costume he built was for a new character Kelba called Harvey the Hound.
|
The article goes on to talk about how he received a cool welcome when he arrived, and how his nephew took over after Kelba turned 40.

Harvey the Hound had some sort of retail concept/kiosk at Chinook Centre. Briefly. For the life of me, I can't remember what it was all about, but it wasn't hockey related. This would've been before the Flames owned the Harvey character outright.
