What about Whitefish or Kalispell? You can get on the water there, might be pricey in August.
Osoyoos is a bit further than you 8 hour limit, but the lake is really nice in the summer.

I’d suggest more south than west due to fire/smoke concerns.

Anywhere around Kootenay Lake might work. Twin Bays Beach just past Creston is a nice, secluded little spot if you can stay in a place near there.

I have no experience going East, but with the fire/smoke risk in August these last few years, I would definitely consider looking into going as far east as possible. I also expect it would be cheaper in Saskatchewan or Manitoba than in BC. No way you would get to Manitoba in 8 hours though.

We’ve been going to Panorama Mountain Resort each summer for a quick little fun getaway every few years with the family. Invermere is nearby if you wish to be on the lake, but at Panorama we go whitewater rafting, downhill mountain biking, zip lining, and spend the rest of the time by the various pools and water slides. There’s mini golf on site, rock climbing, archery, etc. And there’s alternative adventures like ATV tours, horseback riding, and others.
I’ve had friends join us in the past and we would go golfing as well.
All the best.

But if you want mountains and water, BC is better. If you want I guess flat lands, then I guess SK?

Depending on your travel style and flexibility, I'd try keep my options open as long as possible and have an idea for each direction (or book a Plan A with good cancellation policy.
I would think you might be okay finding somewhere last minute in Nakusp/Slocan/New Denver/Kaslo.
Kaslo is a cute town - never stayed there, but grabbing dinner there it seemed like a hidden gem. 20 mins down to the hot springs. About an hour into Nelson. I think there are a bunch of little resort pockets along the lake coast. Same with Crawford Bay side.

Didn’t the OP ask for a lake? Lots of those to the east.

Lakes, rivers, and wetlands of Prince Albert National Park are an essential component of the park’s ecological integrity. From tiny bugs to birds to large mammals like moose, aquatic ecosystems support a variety of habitats and life forms in the park. The park’s large, clean lakes, like Waskesiu Lake, are also a popular recreational feature, making them a great place for visitors to connect with nature.

Blaine Lake is about 30 minutes east of Kalispell and is a really pretty spot, quiet as well. We really enjoyed it.

Lots of good suggestions here already. Panorama/Inveremere, Waterton, and Sandpoint/Coeur d’Alene have been recent highlights for us.
If you’re willing to go a little further, the Oregon coast is amazing, as are the islands off of Vancouver. We stayed a week at Pender Island and loved it. Lots of other options in that area.

After living in the West Kootenays for 10 years I can't recommend it enough for a vacation spot. Castlegar, Nelson, Rossland and Christina Lake are all within an hour of each other. Cheaper and not as busy as the East Kootenays or Kelowna with everything but the wine tours.

Is Whiskey Slew still a thing? Not an endorsement from me, but I remember people from Sask talking it up, using its real name of course.
Growing up we drove to Coeur D'Alene most summers. I remember thinking how awesome it was there but it may be kind of expensive with the exchange rate.
Glacier and Waterton parks pretty nice too.

A little off beat, but I really like the Reddeer river valley.
In terms of attractions Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site, and the Royal Tyrell Dinosaur Museum are within an hour of each other. Likewise there are other cool spots like the Last Chance Saloon in Wayne, and the Dorothy school.
If you're into golf, there are a handful of decent courses near by. likewise, there are some outdoor friendly activities. The red deer river is a really beginner friendly float/ canoe. Further north there Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park which is gorgeous.
The river valley it self is an excellent drive with nice little stops to have a look.
