I would think more than likely. Typically plays pretty physical. He hasn’t been overly physical for a while now.

I think that is selling him short given the way he's been deployed in the AHL and how highly regarded he is by the team and scouts. Mackey has a way higher ceiling and floor than just a depth defenseman. Once he gets his feet wet as an NHLer I'd say he's a very good #5 and potentially a league average #4 based on his skill set and physical tools.

Doesn't make a lot of mistakes, but doesn't stand out either.

Plays with a physical edge, but not a real bruiser.

Good skater and high hockey IQ. Can chip in offensively from time to time.

Third pairing guy who can move up a pairing when needed.

Lots to like.

My hope is we keep Gudbranson and he steps into Zad's slot next year. Would be a perfect fit.
