Doug Wilson stepping down as Sharks GM
https://www.tsn.ca/doug-wilson-san-j...down-1.1782189
Hope his health improves. The incoming GM has an unenviable task of rebuilding as this organization is screwed for a while.

So many contracts that are anchors currently. Was his contract up this year?
Hopefully it isn’t a medical reason

Everyone talks about the recent bad contracts. But Wilson has to be considered one of the best GM's in recent decades. It is unreal how consistent this team was without having high picks. While drafting helped, he made incredible trades. Helped having an owner that was hands-off and geography that was desirable for players.

Guy is a huge ahole IRL
Hope it isn't a medical issue, other than that he can pound sand. What a mess he has left for the next guy lol.

that erik karlsson signing was soooooooooooo bad. I think even Button and Feaster would have avoided it..

Surprising. Has there been a better and more consistent franchise over the last 20 years.
Think he chased it a bit the past few years (karlsson deal as an example), but guy is an excellent GM.

Totally agree.
The Karlsson deal looks bad now, but at the time it was made, Karlsson looked like the real deal. Other things that went wrong are just the natural cycle of players getting old and needing to re-build. He held it off longer than most teams can.

When he was signed many, I would even say most thought that it wouldn't age well at all. He was coming of a major injury and there were some warning signs.

He was an okay gm. Pretty much got gifted the best playmaking center in the league for spare parts. Sharks always had the star power but really blew it on goaltending, Niemi was no good.

Well, every team that won a cup is better...let alone the ones that won 2 or 3

Any of the cup teams deemed perennial cup contenders basically every year for 20+ years?
I can't think of any.

Doesn't really matter if you don't actually win the cup in any of those contender years though, not being able to get over the hump when they had Thornton and Marleau in their primes was a pretty big failure

and they would trade it all for one cup
they can have the decent for longest award but they we never the best
GM failed to get the goalie to push them over the top IMO

Jay feaster won a cup.
My personal opinion, Wilson's team's longevity makes him a superior GM over a cup Winning gm, as an example.
I don't discount the point that GMs should be applauded when taking the team over the hump. Just saying the sharks being that good for that long isn't a common occurrence in this league, especially in the cap era.
It's an interesting debate though

It does matter for their owner when he's looking at the playoff revenue year after year. Sure the cup is the ultimate goal but having a team that successful for so long is a lot of extra money.

Reminds me a bit of Ken Holland without the Stanley Cup rings. Was gifted their best player from the Bruins and benefited from being a city where players wanted to not only play there but remain there long term. They did have some good drafts but his luck ran out when he got overly greedy in free agency. That franchise is going to be mediocre for a long time because of the poor long term contracts he's handed out over the years.

Ummm HELL no.
He was terrible! I thought if the Sharks did re-sign him he would have to take a 3-4 mil paycut. nope.

I'm assuming we have a thread for that deal on here and I'm assuming most people thought it was a terrible contract
