Default How much would you pay? (Question for non-techies)

I'm considering starting a service where someone will go to your house, clean out any and all spyware/adware (even the persistent ones that normal software can't remove) you have on your computer, and install anti-virus and anti-spyware/adware software on your PC(s).

Assuming you don't/didn't know how to do this yourself, how much would you be willing to pay for such a service?

50 cents..

I guess it would depend on how long would it take.. I would think you could likely charge $50 an hour or so. But then again i am in the car business and we charge $85 an hour

A lot also depends on if you are supplying the software, and if so, what software you are providing. For example AVG vs. Symantec.

Being a tech myself I would say about $50 is about the going rate; using freeware software.

Depends what you offer, if you are actually going to go there and do the work, then charge $75. I charged a flat rate of $100, and that usually included about 2.5 hours of work, if they didnt have a high speed connection, I wouldnt do onsite work. I also charged $50 for wireless setups. If they had high speed I charged $25 for a month of remote followup service if they had high speed.

I also included a mini-lesson, a booklet of about 20 pages of common Internet terms, history, some common pitfalls, etc. Also a lesson on comptuer shopping, and basic habits that should be adhered to.

I did the mini-lesson because the danger is that you will clean everything off, then the next day they will click on the magical "winfixer" popup. Then call you and complain your didnt clean it.

Also, I wrote a script that would run programs every 30 days after WX startup, automated Spybot and a few other programs because no matter how easy the program is to use, if people dont use it regualrly then they will always be confused.

I never accepted an jobs from people I worked with, that is just a shat storm waiting to happen. I tended to go more towards the elderly couples, 50's plus. Elderly people are more willing to shell out the cash, and they really appreciate the personal touch (they also tend to have less spyware and as such follow-ups are rarely required) - I advertised the service at few RCL, and senoir homes - dont advertise the service any more but I still get a few referral calls every month and its a nice hidden income to spend on saving up for a condo (thank you ING).

All of those places (geeks on the run or nerd patrol or whatever they're called) do this service.
Figure out how much they charge.
Future shop et al charge about 50$ I think, but they do a bad job.

I've never actually checked out our competitors (thats my bosses job) but our pricing is $85/hr in-shop and $100/hr on-site. Usually never more than 2 hours is charged.

On the side, I'll help out friends and family for about $20/hr.

You'd be amazed at how much people will allow to bung up their computer. My aunt almost had to get a new harddrive hers was so bunged up. No idea about viruses and would click on just about any pop up that showed up, unless it was porn, or bigger penis meds.
