The question is, how long after his buyout until Montreal offers him a contract?

Would be a good fit for the soon to be departed Joel Armia!

To be completely fair, the sexual assault allegations didn’t come up until after that extension was in place.

It was still a bad contract. He might have been bought out regardless.

Still doesn't make sense to me why they didn't just terminate it for violation of the morality clause a la Richards. They'd probably have to settle it but settling by definition means it's less than what you have to pay otherwise.

I doubt his buyout hurts them much cap-wise though. Maybe a few hundred K this year and next?

Why should the team be punished for his conduct?
Shouldn’t this not affect their cap?

Nothing has been proven in court so how could they terminate his contract as part of a morality clause?

There's no requirement for anything to have been proven in court based on the terms of the morality clause.

Nothing was proven in court when they did it with Richards, though in his case he was actually charged rather than just under investigation.

If they want him off the books, they only have two options under the CBA: buy him out or terminate his contract. For some reason they apparently decided the second one wasn't going to work.

You don't get to change the CBA for particular cases because the results seem unfair... the Canucks learned that with the Luongo recapture. And that was arguably way less fair than this.

I joked about the Flames getting DeAngelo and Virtanen but maybe Montreal will actually do it as they tried to get DeAngelo

I wouldn't be surprised if the Flames try to sign him, at $1M or less.

Yes, I know the issues, and yes, no tool box.

But as a 4th line RW, he is a good player. And he has speed and sandpaper. A the right price, and in the right role, I think he can help the Flames.

Not with the baggage and character issues IMO. Character is a huge commodity for Treliving. See Curtis Lazar.

A bottom 6 of:

Dube - Backlund - Pitlick
Lucic - Coleman - Virtanen
Ritchie

would be pretty terrific, and much harder to play against.

JUST GET US A GODDAMNED TOP6 RW ALREADY!!!

Good way to get me to watch zero Flames games ever again.
