Default Happy 85th to Harry Neale...great article in the Sun

I suspect there is a generation of people on this board that have no more than a cursory knowledge of who Harry is/was.

IMO he was the best color man to ever assume that role on HNIC.

His ability to understand when to speak and when not to can't be overstated. He addresses this very thing in this peice so well written by Steve Simmons..

Quote:
When play was going on, the announcer spoke. When play stopped, it was Neale’s time to come in and explain.

When he watches hockey today, sometimes Neale is aghast at what he hears. “It doesn’t seem to work that way anymore,” Neale said. “Sometimes the analyst is talking while the play is going on. I don’t like that. I don’t want a hear a story, as good as it might be, while a guy has a breakaway. I want to hear the breakaway.”
Then you add in his humor and one-liners and he is nothing short of a broadcasting icon who was inducted into the HHOF for his efforts.

Quote:
“Last season we couldn’t win at home. This season we can’t win on the road. My failure as a coach is that I can’t think of anywhere else to play.”
Quote:
Another line still alive: Neale on why he disliked the Canadian national anthem: “Every time I hear that song, we play a bad game.”
Quote:
Another from his coaching days: “I know my players don’t like my practices, but that’s OK, because I don’t like their games.”
Quote:
One night, a defenceman of his over-handled the puck Neale gave it to him outside the dressing room. “You think you’re Bobby Orr. You remind me of Frank Orr (the Toronto Star hockey writer at the time).”
And his take on the best players he ever saw? (He coached Howe at one point and talks about it in the interview)

Quote:
“I have this argument with myself,” Neale said. “On Monday, it’s Howe followed by (Wayne) Gretzky and Orr. On Tuesday, it’s Gretzky followed by Howe and Orr. On Wednesday, it’s Orr, followed by Gretzky and Howe. For me, they’re the top 3. I keep changing the order. Your list might be different from mine. It doesn’t make anybody correct.”

Just a great light read and he ends it with this,

Quote:
He ended the conversation with a riddle of sorts. “How many wrinkles in a horse’s ass?” he asked and quickly answered.

“Smile and I’ll count them.”

Quoted because that's probably the first time "well written" and Steve Simmons have appeared in the same sentence.

Fair enough and I am far from a Simmons fan....but he nailed this one even if he is a contrarian doosh.

Haven't heard that name for a while. He was really good and there was a decade or two where he and Cole called pretty well all the major playoff, SCF games, Olympics, etc. Any negative biases I may have are due to him being swept up in that whole Leafs vortex in the 90's and 00's.

Based on the last line of that article, I'm not sure Neale is a fan of Simmons either.

Always liked his description of Michel Petit, a player with skills but poor hockey sense: “All the tools and no toolbox”!

I know most of the oldies reading this thread will be aware, but worked some Flames games along side Ed Whalen throughout the 80s and 90s too- sprinkled in with Garrett and Pepper over the years as I recall

Some pretty good talent filtered through 2&7 Flames coverage over the early years.

and he coached Klima ! the list of players he coached over the years (he was in his 30s and his 40s when he coached) is incredible including the HOFers Howex2, Yzerman, Oates, Keon...the veterans (guys likely older than him) like Ralph Backstrom and Johnny McKenzie, a host of legendary goons (including the Hanson brother prototypes I believe), so many future coaches and execs (Pleau, Boudreau, Ley , Holmgren, Webster)...hell he even coached John Garrett (and Mike Rogers for that matter as former Flames broadcasters go)

Scotty Bowman for that 1 year was amazing! I can't believe 2&7 somehow got him!

This drives me nuts.

Seconded. Thanks for the link. Harry was dry and hilarious, but also compassionate and kind. Grade A hockey analyst, and more importanly, human being.

to be fair there are lines on the ice and we know how far from the goal they are...its not too difficult to estimate the distance of a shot

Are you trying to tell us there are ways to measure distance using points on the ice, which we all know, while everyone else is reminiscing about Harry Neale?
