Default 2022 WJC to be played in mid-August

https://www.iihf.com/en/events/2022/...ted_in_beijing

Quote:
The 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer, which had to be stopped during the event, will also be played in summer. “It will be in the middle of August in Alberta. It will be a new competition, which means we forget the results (in December),” Tardif said and confirmed that it will be the same age category as in the original tournament, namely players born in 2002 or younger.

“We are talking with all participants and are negotiating on details. It will be after the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. It will be a hockey festival and the teams are excited to do it,” said Tardif and thanked Hockey Canada and USA Hockey for organizing these two top-level junior events in summer.

Briza added that opposed to the December event relegation may be possible at the tournament in August, which means that the loser of the relegation round will be relegated and replaced with Belarus as promoted teams and that the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship in Novosibirsk and Omsk, Russia, will be held with 10 teams.

It’ll be the same eligibility. Anyone who could have played last year will still be able to play. I would imagine some additional players will be added. Will be interesting to see if LA lets Byfield go for example.

I would imagine they would allow any player who was eligible to play in December to be considered eligible for the summer tournament.

I wonder how teams will go about their selection process or will they be required to bring their December rosters.

If it is in the summer and teams are allowed to re-shape their rosters, I could see Canada wanting to add players like Jarvis (CAR), Sillinger (CBJ), Drysdale (ANA), Byfield (LA).

The tournament will be fresh meaning the countries will be allowed to select new players.

Chris Peters was also speculating that it might make NHL teams less likely to allow their signed prospects to go. Preferring them to prepare for training camps that could start 2 weeks after the tournament is done.

I wonder if they'll skip over Red Deer this time and just hold the whole thing in Edmonton. Or perhaps Edmonton and Calgary?

They should of decided this a long time ago.

Teams would be more inclined to send Thier good players as it would be almost like a pre training camp.

I'm not buying what Peters is selling here. It's August, I would think pretty much every GM will want to see what their top prospects look like in the tourney, as it isn't causing them to miss anything else (unless they have nagging injuries of course). And then those kids hit training camp in high gear.

Yeah, would be great if it opens the door for Kerins. And Kusnetsov. And Sergeev.

Agreed. This tournament would essentially remove the need for NHL teams to host their own prospects tournaments.

Look at Zary for example, injured in the first couple of days in training camp last. Valimaki wrecked himself in the off-season. GMs know injuries can happen at any given moment. That won't deter them from sending their 18-20 year old prospects to the best international hockey tournament-In Canada no less.

I don't like that they can have new rosters. I think it should be the same rosters as the original tournament.
