Bob Murray joins Flames as a scout
As per The Athletic, Bob Murray has joined the Flames organization as a scout. He will be primarily scouting the West Coast.
https://theathletic.com/news/former-.../JAv03xdjY7xv/
Given his recent professional conduct issues, an interesting move by the team.
Quote:
Murray, who will largely operate on the West Coast, attended the Ducks’ game against the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night at Honda Center
|
Quote:
There is a connection to the Flames as Murray and current head coach Darryl Sutter have had an association dating back to when the two were teammates on the Chicago Blackhawks in the early 1980s.

Murray hired Sutter as an advisor to the Anaheim coaching staff in the summer of 2019. Sutter would leave to take the Calgary job, replacing Geoff Ward. Ironically, Ward was brought on as an assistant to Ducks head coach Dallas Eakins for the 2021-22 season.

I believe it came out that he had alcohol abuse issues which contributed to that. If he’s gotten help and cleaned himself up I see no reason why we can’t give him a second chance.

All scouts do is sit in the stands, kibbitz with other scouts and make reports. Maybe an ideal job for a guy who treats employees badly. No employees at all.

I wonder if he is going to be a pro or an amateur scout. We can certainly use a couple more scouts in the pro department.

Sutter can do an old buddy a solid with a reference, but ultimately it's Treliving's call.

He would be a pro scout if he was at the Ducks Sharks game tonight.
Flames lost a pro scout to Vancouver this season. Rutherford hired Derek Clancey to be an assistant GM for the Canucks.
Regardless of how the alcohol abuse figures into it, must be uncomfortable for Duck employees that he can now show up to games at the Honda Center.
With the Flames he won't be in a position of power over anyone, unless they gave him some other titles or job duties besides scouting.

I imagine the Flames have done their work to ensure there’s no risk to the organization, and that Bob is ready to be a good professional going forward.

After the trade deadline. Both teams could be sellers at the deadline too.

So he will essentially work directly with Don Maloney, and Tod Button? At least I believe I read Maloney was in charge of pro scouting after Derek Clancey left, or am I completely off base?

Seems strange. Organizations tend to shy away from self inflicted PR wounds like this, in today's climate where forgiveness is basically not a thing.
I sure hope the organization feels he has moved on from his past and also will provide value.

he's a scout, its not like the guy is on TV everyday or even in the city at all...most Flames fans let alone Joe Public won't even know he works for the team.

I get why people aren't crazy about the hire, but personally I don't feel like I know enough to have an opinion about this.
Alcoholism can be a terrible personality altering disease, and getting effectively fired for being an a-hole to your employees can be a wakeup call. Who knows what he's like right now.
And yeah, a pro scout doesn't really have any authority over anyone, so the risk of abusive behavior seems pretty minimal.
Based on his record, he could also be quite good at this job.
