I think one of the most crazy stats are this team is only 14th in points %.

They have the metrics and goal differential of an elite team yet have a somewhat middling record. Their low shooting % hurts them a bit so this team definitely could use some finishers added before the deadline.

It has been such an enjoyable team to watch as they look like the better group more times than not in their games. Johnny and Tkachuk are elite even though many on this board said the Flames have no elite talent. Kylington, Anderson, Mangiapane all emerging this year really helps.

Also interesting that the Flames are the only team that makes the top five in all categories.

Middling. Between 14th and 24th.

If I had to guess, the Flames probably lead the league in 70+% xGF 5-0 beatdowns, which drag the overall stats up a ton but still only count for one win.

That's a really interesting point. The Flames are 6th in the league in actual GF%, so a bit lower than xGF%, but still really high. This seems to support your theory. In which case, consistency appears to be the thing really holding the Flames back from having an elite W-L record (which, personally, accords with my impression from watching them this season.)

Flames are exceptional at generating shot volume, there is no doubt. It’s not everything when it comes to wining and losing but it does seem like that’s the best path for success for this team.

This is also just the NHL this year, parity has disappeared.

There are 14! teams on pace for 100+ points.

9 teams are on pace for below 80 points.

Compare that to the last full season in 18-19.

There were 9 100 point teams that season and the Flames were second in the league with 107 points.

The Flames current . 619 point percentage would have been 6th in the NHL in 18-19, that sits them at 14th this year.

It's not that the Flames are bad, it's just that there is a huge gap this season in terms of the quality of teams.

I think another reason is "Sutter Hocky TM" has always led to xGF that doesn't necessarily match actual GF. Many theories on why that is, but I suspect it also has to do with the fact that Calgary has lots of guys who can play the system well but aren't good finishers.

Those advanced stats show a strong team. They also show that it might be worthwhile to trade for a player who can finish. Hopefully that is on top of Tre’s list, as opposed to a top 4 d-man.

I don't want to lose any one from this magnificent team.

I'd love to have two runs at it with this group, with just minor changes.

Might be wishful thinking, but I hope the players feel the same way after a strong finish to the year.
