Backlund's nickname revealed - Second-Half Backs
Haven't seen a thread on this but Coleman revealed Mikael Backlund's locker-room nickname.
He's Second-Half Backs.
I didn't post all the numbers but it's interesting because he recognizes this is a real trend. He often doubles his first-half output later in the year.
Not a bad thing for this year ...

Strange, I've been calling him Second-Half Backs for years now, lol.

When I say “Backs” in my head, it sounds like Mark Hamill’s Joker.
Anyone else?

So strange that it takes him a half a season to get going but I suppose it's better than the other way around.

A guy that grew up mentored by Iggy. What else would we expect

His game before the break was solid too ... in Arizona he had the third assists on two goals that he completely created by turning pucks over but didn't get points.

Had a look at his last 3 seasons, and 1st half vs 2nd half pencils out as:
1st half
52 points/109 games
.48 ppg
2nd half
72 points/92 games
.78 ppg
Definitely something to it. Would be a cool stat if it holds across his entire career.

He's a low intensity player in the first half of the season and seems to get fired up emotionally in the second half. Maybe he's just too "in his head" in the early going of a season and attempts to "think" the game.

He was a beast last game. 2 hits in one shift where he coldcocked the guys he hit.
When he plays well consistently we win allot of hockey games

This is why I have become fairly dismissive of complaints about him through the first half of tne year. It seems like it has been a few seasons now that fans have been writing Backlund's NHL obituaries in December and January only to see him become one of the best forwards on the team in February.

It’s a pretty backhanded complement. I bet he doesn’t love it.

To butcher a quote from Sutter years ago when asked about Huselius early season performance.
"I want players who are good in March and April, not November and December. "
