"Future considerations" must be strictly defined at the time of the trade, but they can be as elaborate as the teams want. They can't trade goods, services, cash in lieu or cap room—only players and picks—but they can add pretty much whatever the hell proviso they want to.
A "conditional draft pick" is a super-common example of future considerations: Team A will send Team B an Mth round pick if X happens, or an Nth round pick if X doesn't happen.
When it involves players it's more complicated; usually there would be a named list of players, and one of the teams would have their choice of who gets moved, or there would be a set of conditions attached that would determine whether a player would be moved at all.
The future considerations in this deal for Boychuk could be "if Boychuk returns from retirement and plays 40 games, the Sabres will send the Islanders a 7th round draft pick", or "if the Sabres make the 2022-23 Stanley Cup Finals they will send the Islanders a 5th round pick", something like that. Can be as outlandish as they want, but the considerations do have to be spelled out.
