Default Flames 5 Hawks 2

Flames 5 Hawks 2

- Lucic stands out with goal and a great play on the empty netter
- Flames blow two leads but don't panic
- Flames blueline on display as all 6 have solid nights
- That's four in a row
- Points in 17 of 20

I would never have imagined that.

Considering this is their third game in 4 nights and having Travelled from Boston to Calgary for this, and to put forth that type of game is pretty impressive.

Rasmus really looked like he had a good game, at least while I was watching.
The second line was excellent, never playing in their own zone seemingly.
I'm OK with Zadorov playing. Valimaki might have more puck handling skill but he doesn't really give you much offense at all. Flames are building an identity which is probably more important.

Great goaltender duel

Shame to see the first ES goal against happen to Johnny and Tkachuk on that disconnect with Markstrom and Lindholm

But they got the bounce that mattered tonight, on Tkachuk’s goal

Lucic is a beauty

I am fine with either, but as far as offense, Valimaki assisted on the first goal last game with a nice shot far side in a place where goalies usually generate a rebound

The scouts deserve a pat on the back for turning two 2015 2nd round picks into Andersson and Kylington.

That 6th rounder was not too bad either

I have a feeling Valimaki isn't up to Sutter's conditioning standard, mostly due to his injury.

Anyhow, great game, and I cringe way less watching Flames hockey now.

Does the NHL employ tracking like is seen in other sports, soccer/rugby to identify fatigue, amongst other things?

Yeah no kidding.

Imagine the hole if they didn't have those two in the top four right now.

A few years ago they had four of them in the system, and I can remember hoping two pan out.

Kylington
Valimaki

on the left side

Andersson
Fox

on the right side

With Kylington's surge, and Andersson righting the ship this year that may be three of the four as top four defensemen.

That's not easy at the draft table.

Hopefully Valimaki can find some traction and make it a sweep.

It took Kylington right up until the last minute to show his ultimate potential so I feel we may have to be patient with Valimaki.

The Flames did not draft in the top 50 of either the 2010 and 2015 drafts and yet have Kylington, Mangiapane, Lindholm, Hanifin, and Andersson to show for them, with the only other asset spent being their 2016 3rd

Kinda wild in retrospect, even if I don't necessarily think some of those moves were the right ones in the moment.

Thank goodness Seattle didn't take Kylington.

Could you imagine if they had taken him, and he was breaking out like this with a division rival?

Yikes.

Imagine if Calgary gave up their first round pick this year (Coronato) to force Seattle to take Kylington who was now breaking out for a division rival!?!?

1 year of Giordano for Kylington and Coronato. OUCH

Can Valimaki be assigned to the AHL? It seems to me that he would be better off playing big minutes for the Heat than sitting in the press box.

There were implications from Tre's post-Gio press conference that the Flames actually pushed to do something like that, but Seattle got too greedy. Maybe Tre was only happy packing a second with Kylington.

According to some media reports, that was Seattle's asking price to leave Giordano alone.

It would have been like trading both your legs for a nice pair of shoes.
