Default Jobs, jobs, jobs . . . . . in Australia

My wife's nephew just started in Indonesia for an Australian oil company . . . . and he'll be spending downtime and taking courses in the latter . . . .

The LA Times says Australia is a victim of its own success, now going international to find workers for all the jobs available internally.

And Canada is in the same boat.

Interesting. Do you know how the Aussies are handling credentialing? (certifying engineers etc.) Did your nephew have to go through that?

Alberta will be short about 100,000 workers in the next 5- 10 years and its an enormous issue here.

Yeah, I've noticed in my line of work that the Australian companies are doing a lot more advertising as well. Offering to pay relocation expenses etc...Had that been available 5 years ago, I'd have been gone for sure. Now it's not so easy...but it is tempting. The idea of going down to the beach to do a swim or some surfing in the ocean prior to going to work always appealed to me.

For a recently graduated student with his bachelor's of Commerce, I find it hard to believe that there's this much demand apparently out there.

I'm having a frikkin' difficult time finding employment with alot of firms here in Calgary - especially in oil and gas, which is an industry I originally promised I'd never go in to.

It must be engineers (God forbid ) that are in demand... because this is extremely taxing to deal with.

Maybe I'll go try my luck in Australia...

I'm in the same situation as you. Everytime I read about how "hot" the job market is I feel like an idiot because I can't seem to find employment.

What avenues are you using for your job search?

I've heard the same from alot of people and experienced it myself.

Unfortunately, I think the key word for the hot job market is "experienced". Lots of companies need people but they aren't willing to take the time and effort to train anyone...this is really bad in the trades. They want someone with built in experience to step right in. They aren't victims of a hot market but victims of their own short sightednesss.

In the old days (Sorry to some of you, it seems like yesterday i am sure!) companies would invest in their own staff and train internally - often finding incrediably capable staff right out of high school not to mention university.

Now they seem to want everyone to have 10+ years experience and yet are not willing to start giving experience to anyone.

Is it any surprise that there is this so called shortage?

I too find myself in a similiar situation to many of you. Where getting any good 'in', finding someone to take a chance on you despite the fact you are not an engineer (or have engineer parents), are not specifically trained for the job in question yet have the mental abilities and past experiences to learn it within hours, days, or at worst months, is impossible despite the fact there is this MASSIVE shortage of skilled workers. For god sakes, i would work for free for an extended period if it meant i was trained internally for a GOOD oil and gas (or environmental, logistical, securities, or whatever) job.

I don't know. He's running a rig there, top to bottom. He sent me a three word e-mail the other day: "I'm luvin' it." He told his mother he couldn't believe he hadn't done this before now. Twenty-eight days in, twenty-eight days out.

He told me the company will be flying him to Australia and paying for a course he has to take . . . . . he said he would have to pay for it himself if he were here.

All in all, it sounds like its going well for him and that we might have a place to stay when we go to Australia some year.
