Contract was for 2.14 mil but you gotta tack on the "please stay in Buffalo" fee of 5 mil/year.

Note that this upcoming season he will be making 1.4 M. This contract kicks in during 2023-2024.

Interesting that they could have waited a few months into the season to sign him to see how he produced. Scored 38 goals last year.

24 years old and just put up 38 goals and 68 points. I think this deal will look good within a couple years.

He put up 38 goals and is also 6'7'', so they are likely projecting him to improve as he grows into his size.....but this seems outrageous for someone with one good season. He's also turning 25. He's not 19. This could just as easily be a one off season.

This is insanely risky.

WTF? How about having a guy post big numbers in more than one season before backing up the Brinks truck?

Huh. Quite the contract for one really good year. Good luck to him and the Sabres on this one.

They clearly didn’t learn to be cautious after the Skinner deal.

If Thompson and Skinner keep working out as a duo like they did last year, then both their contracts are worth it ... but I worry that's a big if. Thompson feels like a natural regression candidate once Cozens or Quinn takes over as the 1C in Buffalo.

Buffalo just never learns with these big contracts. Okposo, Skinner, Ristolainen..am I missing anyone?

They see one good year and assume it will always be that good. A really bad way for a small market club to do business.

Yikes...even if he managed to repeat last year, what would he have been looking at? Maybe 8.5M?

OTOH, he might actually be a 3M player. He was RFA at the end of current deal...this is mind bottling.

Mangiapane was highly productive and an effective 200' player in both the shortened seasons ... Thompson wasn't, to say the least.

What an odd thread to crap on the Mangi contract in.

Mangi was on pace for 20.5 and 26 goals the previous two seasons...slotting lower with less ice time...it's not his fault the seasons were shorter than usual.
