I am fascinated to see if there ever will be any consequences for some of these longer term deals signed the past 3 years that kept AAV's down but tacked on extra years. In this case the dollar figure is a bit higher, but the term is pretty manageable.
I tend to think teams are better off just paying the value a player is worth when the player is worth it, and not carrying around dead weight. But there are so many poorly run franchises who make that "smart" move to take on a garbage contract to gain an extra flame out prospect or 2nd round pick as they start up rebuild #7 type of thing that it isn't hurting anyone yet.
