It's like this every time we have a deep freeze. I once waited 3.5 hours for a cab a few years back. I tried calling 3 different companies, they were all booked solid.

Also it is a prime weekend for Office Christmas parties. I know my wife and I both have ours next Friday (same night, luckily they are both in different buildings at the Zoo).

I spent an hour last night waiting for a cab in the rain. I'm surprised it wasn't snow, actually. It felt like -2 (which is very cold for this city!). But there was some good luck. I found a bench, but then thought "oh fata, it's wet, can't sit there". But then I saw it had a newspaper on it. Ten seconds of thinking outside the box later, I had a dry seat for both me and the gf. It had only started raining so the paper wasn't soaked through. Move the paper, dry underneath. Open the paper, dry pages. I'm so smart.

Most cab companies have alternative numbers which will re-direct to dispatch. (No busy tone) Also, try small cab companies (IE Not yellow, checker) Dont know of which ones, but call 411 or something, theyll have a list of a bunch.

Last night we tried to get a cab for 45 minutes at 2am with no luck. We had to call one of our friends to pick us up. It was ridiculous, and I know NYE is gonna be 50 times worse

This is the time where Calgary needs to be like New york...cab drivers everywhere and you dont need to phone in advance.

Wasn't there something in the news a while ago about how the city wasn't issuing more taxi licenses? So we have as many taxi's as when we were a city of 700,000 people; and driving drunk was more common place.
