Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2021 - Round 21 Run Off
Welcome to the annual Calgarypuck Prospect Poll!
As per usual ...
1. Rank the prospects as you like. Upside, chances, or trade value
2. I will try and do one a day which should get us to rookie camp range
3. Graduates and/or runoffs will be determined in each case
4. Please don't complain that the polls are going to deep. We go until all the prospects are ranked, so don't vote if you don't want to.

This should be Kerins pretty easily, imo. Don't see the justification for voting Whynot over him.

5'10" winger that was a sixth round pick
vs
6'1" defenseman that was a third round pick
Justification isn't that hard!

6'1" defenseman drafted in the 3rd round, vs
5'10" LW who was drafted in the 6th round, was less than a pt per game in jr, and only played 4 games last year?
I can see some justification

I weigh draft pedigree and height less than Kerins being a 30-goal scorer in his draft year and how he was just invited to Team Canada's WJC summer camp. His even-strength production in his draft year was crazy impressive, on par with guys who went in the first round.
Are we really penalizing him for playing four games last year? That's four more games than the vast majority of OHLers played and he only got them because the Flames' brass liked him enough to let him hang around the AHL team all year.

No, we're not penalizing Kerins for anything.
We're penalizing you for making the silly comment that there was no justification to like the other, completely different player. Especially when said player has the much higher draft pedigree, plays a more important position, and has better physical tools.

For clarity, there is ample justification for either.

I don't think this team needs more small wingers, especially left wingers. This team needs more help on the back end.

Pedigree wise I think it actually goes to Whynot. He was viewed as a potential first rounder until the COVID season, and captained the Nova Scotia CWG team.

Whynot certainly has different physical tools. Better? Not sure. I think Kerins' game is complemented by his 5'10" frame. He's elusive and has a low centre of gravity.
Anyway, very few OHL forwards score at a point-per-game rate in their draft year so I'm not sure why that'd be the expectation for Kerins. Here's the full list of OHL players the same age who scored more goals at even strength in 2019-20:
Jack Quinn
Marco Rossi
Cole Perfetti
Quinton Byfield scored 24 goals at 5v5 compared to Kerins' 26 but played 19 fewer games. Fellow first-rounder Jacob Perreault also scored 24 and played seven fewer games than Kerins' 64. Tyson Foerster scored 17 in 62.
Whynot is impressive but in my opinion this is Kerins without thinking twice. He'd comfortably be in my top-20, somewhere in the 15-19 range.

I'm just pleased at #21 there are still interesting enough prospects that there's an actual debate

So just go straight to posting this good information about the player, instead of saying there is no justification for a different player.

I didn't say there's no possible justification. People are free to pick however they want. I personally just can't see the justification for Whynot given my own philosophy and Kerins' OHL trajectory.

Kerins, that World Juniors invite is huge
But who the hell voted for Tyler Parsons ahead of these guys? Yikes, let it go and accept that he is a bust
