Default Athletic Front Office Rankings Flames #24

The Athletic run a fan survey on how the teams fans and NHL fans in General see the team's front office. The Author Dom Luszczyszyn is their Fancy stats guy driving the JFRESH school of player/team ranking and as such has the Flames as one of his favs. In this article he is is commenting on the survey data and feedback

Not a particular pretty picture as the Flames are not ranked in the top half of the league in any category by either their fan base or the general public.

It seems that I might not be the only one that is fed up with the Flames ongoing situation and not buying into having an aging HOF coach and a good goalie with a limited track record will fix.

NSFW!

I don’t know what the plan is here and it seems neither do most Flames fans. Calgary was a mediocre team last year that didn’t make the playoffs in an all-Canada division, lost its captain, didn’t replace him, and are basically just going to run it back next year? I guess …

The Flames are at the same crossroads that all average teams are at when they realize they’re stuck in the mushy middle: go all-in or fold. Pick a lane and either try to contend or try to rebuild. Doing neither just delays the inevitable and wastes time for everyone and that lack of vision is obviously going to be frustrating to a hungry fan base. Only 4 percent were more confident in this team now than they were last year, the lowest of any team in the league. Do something!

As there are so many people here that follow the Oilers so closely they came in at #28 .

So there is always that to lighten the mood.

This is bang on and exactly matching Treliving’s personality. Neither hot nor cold, little risk little reward, slow and steady doesn’t come last.

I participated in the survey and am pleased to see most have a similar opinion. I would much rather the team was ranked in the top 10, but that may never be achievable for the Flames. It's a brutally honest assessment of a franchise that is just completely lost.

Sadly, as fans, we are having the exact same conversations about the direction that we had 12 years ago, and it seems like ownership/management didn't learn a lesson that trying to coax the beater down the highway only works for so long before it complete craps out.

If anyone in the business world produced results as bad as Treliving has over 7 years they would have been long out of a job, yet somehow he continues to hold the keys to the rudderless ship he's built.

Oilers are #28 because they'd be historically bad still without McDavid magically landing in their laps and everybody knows it.

The teams they've built around him practically counteract all the things he adds. Just utter incompetence, and imo Holland's reckless summer splurging is going to look very bad on them not far into the season.

Actually, history shows the way from here is sideways. Perpetually sideways.

Fan surveys are fun but don’t carry much weight. The results are basically meaningless.

Trouble is business has been fine in terms of profit.

And yet for whatever reason, fans seem to be correct much more often than most GMs. When fans criticize bad draft picks, trades, hires, or signings, they're almost always right in hindsight.

Unless they're Oiler fans, in which case they are delusional about everything.

Fan surveys like most internet discussions, draw more disgruntled fans than happy ones. That being said, this is how elections are won. I wouldn't say there is no weight associated with these responses.

Are they? Or do you just think that's the case.

Fans are wrong a lot. They just tend to only remember when they are right.

Hang on. This was already discussed in the Treliving must go thread

- Didn't grade 3/5 or higher in any category from non-Flames fans.
- Flames fans graded him 3.5 in the cap management category, while non-Flames fans graded him 2.8. This was his highest category among both sets of fans.
- On the other hand, Flames fans graded him 2.1 in free agency while non-Flames fans graded him 2.5.
- His lowest grade was in the Vision category where Flames fans graded him 2.1 while non-Flames fans graded him 2.2.
- Top 5: Lightning (1st), Avalanche, Red Wings, Panthers, Islanders
- Bottom 5: Sabres (32nd), Sharks, Coyotes, Canucks, Oilers
Seems like fans league wide are even more disgruntled with Treliving than Flames fans!

Fans criticize everything though...in a league where 1 team of 32 wins its not that hard to be "right"

Utterly pointless survey. I mean who would start a thread based on nothing just to stir the pot?

Checks OP...right.

Unfortunately this is just the way it is, and will always be for this organization as long as winning the cup comes secondary to making the playoffs.

24th... we could be 32nd. We can go down and not up. Or we can be stuck here, mired in mediocrity.

Just because there is more room to go up doesn't mean it will happen. The method to go up has to be different from the method that got you where you are right now.
