Flames Flames hire David Åkerblom as an European Scout

He was to be the J20 coach for Brynas IF this season but turned it down to become a scout for the Flames. He was the coach of their U16 team for the last 3 years

Brynas IF produced Lindholm and Markstrom. He says he grew up with them

This is a great move for the organization. I have thought we have lacked a little bit in European scouting and this will definitely help.

Sounds like he might be replacing Hakan Loob and Bobbie Hagelin?

Both are no longer listed on the Flames site.

Loob was a pro scout, Hagelin was an amateur scout. What is the role for this new guy? U16 and U20 coach would imply amateur scout, I guess

I guess that means Steve Pleau is the only official pro scout in the Flames organization? The Flames were already very short on pro scouts relative to the rest of the teams in the league. Even a small market team like Columbus has 4. So do the Florida Panthers. Nashville has somewhere between 4 to 6. Losing Loob doesn't help in this regard.

It's especially curious when you consider the fact that pro scouting has been a stark weakness of the Flames for years.

You have to think the Flames will make more hires on this end, especially if Åkerblom's role is split between the pro and amateur sides.

How much pro scouting do they actually need to do in Europe?

Most of the value there would be on the amateur side, no?

(I get that some draft age kids might be playing pro in Europe)

I think Conroy, Pascall, Snow, Maloney, even Tre are pro scouts in function if not in title. Plus the video guys, and Sigalet for all goalies
