Fun Scenario for 2022
Imagine this scenario:
It's trade deadline 2022, despite working hard through the season on a new contract, the Flames and Gaudreau haven't yet managed to agree to terms.
The Flames, under Sutter have surprised and been riding a tight defense, good goaltending and an offense led by Gaudreau to contend for the Division lead all season.
If the Flames do not manage to reach a deal with Gaudreau by trade deadline day, would they move Gaudreau or would they hang on to Johnny for a playoff run?
What do you think they would do?
What would you want to see them do?

They would keep him for the play off run, lose in the first round, lose JG for nothing, it's the flames way.
What they SHOULD have done was move him before the NTC kicked in and got a good return, now they will get an Iggy type of return, or as above, nothing at all.
Before anyone jumps on me, remember the question said no extension was agreed.

It has nothing to do with a player being loyal, the guy signed a contract that paid him x dollars, that is as far as his loyalty goes. Just the same as anyone elses loyalty to an employer. Another employer/team comes along witha better offer, or you see a job in a city you want to live/play in, we will see how far that loyalty goes when his contract expires.
In this case, before JG had the team over a barrell with his NTC, you get the new deal in place or you ship him, it's just sensible assett management.
Will you be happy if he walks for nothing, or will you blame BT for not getting a good return for that loyal player?

You are pulling out two simple narratives
How does the team do in the fun scenario if he stays? Any playoff success?
Who is to say he doesn’t re-sign?
What is the temperature around negotiations?
The OP said it was a fun exercise but you are going ahead and looking at the worst case scenario as inevitable
I’m uninterested in discussing further. Other people can go ahead and have this fun

It's my ball and I don't want to play anymore, so i'm taking it home
The OP created a scenario and asked for what people thought would happen, nothing inevitable about it, all hyperthetical. We're just having fun

Fun
Yeah, if you are actually a contender you obviously trade him because you are paranoid or clever
Why go for it as a contender? Sell!
Sends a good message

This isn’t a fun scenario. This is as painful and joyless as any success could ever be. This is the Kobyashi Maru scenario for the Flames. There is no win here, only defeat. This is a test to determine how you make the best of a no-win scenario and limit the damage to the team. Good luck in trying to spin this into a positive, because there isn’t one. Even in success the team has achieved failure.

The Gaudreau situation is curious. I get the sense the organization thought they were close but something has changed and they are now in a situation where he may be playing out the last season of his contract without an extension. I'm pretty sure if they are in a playoff spot they will not trade Gaudreau at the deadline as playoffs is everything to ownership. In your scenario I expect Treliving will try to trade Johnny's rights prior to the 2022 draft for maybe a 2nd round pick to a team like the Devils that may want to negotiate with him before the Flyers.

Literally the least fun scenario I could think of really and I refuse to answer because I’m hoping reality never gets close to this becoming a decision Treliving has to make come trade deadline. Just re-sign him already.

They keep him and go on a historic run to win the cup and then JG signs for a hometown discount after the season.

If this team is anywhere in the vicinity of a playoff spot, they won't trade Johnny whether he's signed or not.
They were just fine watching Brodie walk out the door for nothing.

Trade him. You need to get something back, no question. They've gone 2 straight years of losing one of their core players with no return, can't happen again. If they've gone the whole season and haven't agreed on a contract its not a great sign that they will. I know landeskog did this with the avs but it was beneficial for him to return to a stacked team with arguably the best player in the game, that's not the Flames and they dont have enough assets to let their most valuable one walk and get nothing back. You trade him and try to spark the team to play well without him and hope he signs in the off season. I agree that he should have been traded by now before his NTC kicked in because he can pretty much veto any deal at this point so this whole thing is a mute point.

... which was a stupid move. That should have been strike two for Treliving (strike one being the Neal signing and subsequent Lucic trade). Strike three should have been Gio walking for nothing. These three events were ones where the team got worse through Trelivings mismanagement of the situations and not having a plan in how to deal with the continuity of the lineup. They can't allow a young player just entering his prime years to walk away for nothing. They've done it once, and got away with it. That is unacceptable. Just like not getting something for Cammalleri was a huge mistake, not getting something for Brodie and Gio were big mistakes. The team gets progressively worse because management has to show what shrewd negotiators they are by ultimately getting nothing for something that had value.

When Brodie left didn’t we get Tanev? Who’s better.
When Gio left didn’t we get Zadorov?
Lucic is better than Neil.
Not quite following.

Not quite following. Are you saying that when Gaudreau leaves we will get Mitch Marner? Who the Flames bring in as a replacement is irrelevant. The issue is that the organization is not recouping assets and letting core players walk for nothing.

Well I don't see any scenario where the Flames won't be able to re-sign Gaudreau. Its simple math, if Johnny can get max 9m x7y on the open market =63 m total. 8x 8.5 = 68m . Doesn't make economic sense for Johnny to leave unless the Flames are being overly stingy. If he wants to play for a team he can request a trade. I don't think we will ever lose Johnny for nothing. That being said Tavares did walk after saying all the right things. Left money on the table to go to Toronto.....can't think of any other star player that walked from a playoff team ready to negotiate a max term contract.

We could have gotten Tanev anyways and then had Tanev plus whatever assets you returned for trading Brodie.
