Default Rant : NHL PA and jersey lettering costs

Here is the story:

I bought a team canada home jersey from KG and wanted to customize it.

I called 2 places, great plains and cal-city crest.

They asked which era of team canada jersey is was, to get the special lettering right.

I asked to have phaneuf and 3 put on.

Total, $80!!! WTF?

Then I thought about it some more - I didn't really need the special lettering, I could get by with just the ordinary lettering at about $1.50 per.

So I called back and said that I only wanted the normal lettering.

They asked if I was putting my name or a players name on.

I asked what difference did it make.

I was told that if it was a players name, I HAD to buy a 'kit' for $80, that I couldn't have it done normally.

I flipped. I asked why that was.

I was told that it was a new clause in the NHLPA contract. If I put my own name on, it was no problem, but if it was a players name, I had to buy the kit, they would not do it any other way.

Is that the most ridiculous thing in the world or what?

How in gods green earth can they enforce that? Surely this isnt legal?!?

And I have since gotten that same response from another store, making it 3 so far.

I was thinking of telling them my name is Rico Phanuef and to put my name and number on the back...

Thoughts? Comments? Help?

Maybe I can get one to put the number on, and another to put the name on...

Do you think it's fair that a buisness makes money of Phaneuf's name, and he doesn't see a cent of it? There's a reason the PA wanted money from jersey cresting... it's their names.

I understand your pain, but it's the same with anything else. Actors don't endorse anything without compinsation. It's the same here.

lets use this as a ridicluous example...

if i were to buy a bunch of trees, and arrange them into the word phanuef and the number 3 in my back yard, should he get compensated for that?

how about if i go to crappy tire and get those metal office letter things and stick the same to my car or house - should he be compensated?

i can (slightly) see if i wanted the original team canada letters - they are unique.

but for buying ordinary sew on letters, i dont think they have a right to charge extra for that at all.

besides, theyre not making money off of the name, but the letters.

they would make the same amount if i asked for the name hjfpahf and the number 7

They can enforce it because I think that indivdual NHL player names like that come/are ordered by the 3rd party cresting shop, in NHL/NHLPA licensed individual packages..dudes at the cresting shop just don't throw together stock team letters anymore to arrange names.

And, if they get caught breaking NHL licensing rules by doing it themselves, they risk losing the ability to order official lettering/numbering in the future from the NHL/NHLPA...which is likely 60% of their business.

seriously $80 is pretty much the norm for name & number lettering, I don't know what you're ranting about, it's like people bitchin' about gas being 83.4/L when the government could've done without those 40 cents of taxes, except you can live without the lettering not the gas (in this town anyways) .

What happens if you tell them your name is "Jimmy Phaneuf", and when you play hockey you like to use #3?

MLB and NFL have been doing that for years. Not sure about the NBA. And yes, I think it's a ripoff too.

why am i ranting?

because it costs about $1.50 a letter, and a little higher for the number.

thus, the job should cost about $20, maybe 25.

not friggin' 80.

I have a friend with the last name Phaneuf. Unfortunately she lives in Toronto so that won't help you.

OT: Off topic, but related.

If you do get specific era lettering on any custom jersey, make sure they have the right templates. We just got an 89 Flames jersey lettered with "Mullen - 7" and Great Plains totally screwed up the 7s. They used an early 80s template that had squares on the bottoms of the 7s. It was a bit of a pain to get it fixed because they kept trying to convince us that it was right and we had to send in pictures of Mullen before they would fix it. Just got it back yesterday after almost 2 months and it finally looks right.
You would think the company that does the lettering for the Flames would know what the 89 numbers looked like, but I guess not.

I just dropped off my vintage Oilers jerssey off at Jersey City to get Gretzky's name and number on it and it cost me $90 and I thought that was reasonable. (Got the jersey for only $25 brand new).

I guess this is a bad time to inform you that if you got this done prior to Oct. 5 it would have been MUCH cheaper since Phaneuf was not a member of the NHLPA at the time.

i see nothing wrong with someone making money off of the use of their name.

if you could charge people to put YOUR name on their back, you should too. but i doubt there is a market for it and therefor you dont go through the trouble of setting up a system to ensure you are compensated.

you dont have to pay the money, just as you dont need to purchase anything you dont think has "value". if you dont feel its worth $80 to have Phaneuf's name and # on your jersey, then dont do it. It is HIS right to charge you for it though.
