Default Flyers sign RFA G Carter Hart to 3 years 3.979 million AAV extension

Flyers have re-signed their young netminder to a 3 year extension (11.9 million total). Hart did have a rough season last year, and it would be interesting to see how he bounces back.

Quote:
In 27 games last season, Hart posted a 9-11-5 record with a .877 save percentage and a 3.67 goals-against average. He had a 24-13-3 record during the 2019-20 season with a .914 save percentage and a 2.42 GAA.

If he pops this could be a great deal.

Higher than he deserves after last year, but still great value for his potental and numbers from the season before.

Goalies are scary. Guys like Cam Ward, Matt Murray, Steve Mason seemed like sure things too

He had an awful year, but if he can look more like the 19-20 season, and not the 20-21 season, this will be a good deal.
If not, it's only 3 years (and it's really not that big of a cap hit).

Realistically, there was no way he was going to sign a 6+ year contract as his first RFA contract without much proven. Looking at past young goalies with hype, they all signed a 1-3 year deal out of their ELC. Price, Fleury, Rask, Vasi, Rinne, Hellebuyck. The notable exception would be Binnington.

In fact, 3 year is already on the longer side of the spectrum -- A 1 or 2 year bridge deal is much more common for goalies. A 1 or 2 year deal would have been cheaper for AAV at ~3M, with the assumption that his next contract would be a long term mega deal at 6M+. Going for a 3 year deal shows his side has less confidence that he will become an elite goalie. He's hedging against the outcome that he fizzles out and is securing more money now.

After a bad season, I would have expected a 1 or 2 year, show me deal. TO me, this deal is kind of floating in no man's land

To be fair Ward actually had a pretty good career. He was a surefire starter for at least 7 years.

But yeah goalies are unpredictable.

3 years under 4M AAV? It really can only get so bad.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see a major bounce back season and for this to look like a tremendous value.

Worst case scenario is they trade him to a rebuilding team if it isn't working out. Some teams will always be willing to take a flyer on him given his age
