Realistically, there was no way he was going to sign a 6+ year contract as his first RFA contract without much proven. Looking at past young goalies with hype, they all signed a 1-3 year deal out of their ELC. Price, Fleury, Rask, Vasi, Rinne, Hellebuyck. The notable exception would be Binnington.
In fact, 3 year is already on the longer side of the spectrum -- A 1 or 2 year bridge deal is much more common for goalies. A 1 or 2 year deal would have been cheaper for AAV at ~3M, with the assumption that his next contract would be a long term mega deal at 6M+. Going for a 3 year deal shows his side has less confidence that he will become an elite goalie. He's hedging against the outcome that he fizzles out and is securing more money now.
