San Jose is a cap mess
Over 30% of cap tied up in Burns (8M, 36), Karlsson (11.5M, 31) and Vlasic (7M, 35) for the next 4+ years. Karlsson is signed for 6 more years at 11.5M. He hasn't aged well at all.
They have over 70% of their cap tied up in only 9 players. Hertl is the only contract ending next year. Couture's contract is starting to look really bad and they have 6 more years 8M until he is 38. They have even managed to overpay their younger players with Meier making 6M after one decent season. Is Kane tradeable at this point making 7M?
Its a hot mess! How does Wilson still have a job? Is there any plausible way they can be competitive in the next 5 years?

Once most teams’ best players hit the wall, they’ll go through 5 years of being non-competitive.
It’s just that with the Sharks, you know there is zero chance of them turning it around.
Wilson would have seen this day coming.

I suspect the hope was that they would have won a cup before this happened, which a few years ago wasn’t out of the question. They knew this was going to happen but it’s much easier to sell to fans if you have a Stanley Cup to point to.
Unfortunately it didn’t work out and now they have nothing to show for their years of success and are a dumpster fire.

The Karlsson contract was pretty recent.

San Jose has had the most sustained success of the 3 Cali teams in last 20 years but they will end the run without a cup while the other two got their cups. The other two are already on the upswing while SJ will be a mess for few years. At least their fans got to have some real star players on their team for few years; Thornton, Marleau, Burns, Heatley, Karlsson, Nabakov, Pavelski, Nolan, Vlasic, Cheechoo and his one time 56 goals.
Was a good run, they tried everything.

Given his injuries and the fact that there were already signs of decline it truly was a very high risk trade and signing. I'm actually surprised Wilson hasn't been fired. It's one thing to build a very good regular season team that had a good run but he put the organization in a spot where they are facing one of the most difficult transitions ever as he handed out so many long term deals that have aged extremely poorly that there's very little hope for any sort of turnaround as they have missed the playoffs the last two seasons and it's hard to imagine them making the playoffs again until the back half of this decade.

I doubt they expect to be competitive over the next five years. They knew when they signed those contracts they would look bad down then road. But they were willing to make that tradeoff in the hopes of competing for the Cup in the short term. The gamble didn’t pay off.

I think San Jose is in the worst spot right now of any NHL team. Although, it's also difficult to be optimistic about Buffalo either. In a vacuum, I'd take Buffalo's roster situation over San Jose's but San Jose is a much cleaner run organization (big understatement?)

Kane at 50% retained is a very strong trade piece IMO

"Retained? What does that mean." Ken Holland, probably.

Theres a lot of teams that are going to be in Cap Hell pretty quickly here and you can only trade so many bad contracts to Arizona.

The Flames for one. I think this team has the worst ratio of signed players to remaining cap out of any team in the league according to Capfriendly. 13 roster players signed for next season and 24/50 contracts, with only $14.5 million in cap space. That’s bad, at least in the short term.
At least long term, there isn’t a lot of commitment which is good if a rebuild is on the horizon.
