Icon32 Wild buying out Parise and Suter

https://twitter.com/user/status/1414973266440114179

Quote:
the wild will pay each $6.7 million over the next eight years and be charged with $2.371 million, $6.371 million and $7.371 million cap hits in the next four years, respectively, for each, then $833,333 cap hits the four years after that for each.

This gives the wild another $10.33 million in cap space to play with this summer.

Been rumored they were after Eichel. This will help.

What a bone headed decision to sign them for that much and that long .

Yikes, those are some awful buyout numbers.

It buys them almost $10 million in cap space next season, but then it's virtually full-value of the cap hits for the three seasons after next.

I guess they'll be going all-in next season.

This should allow them to protect Dumba in the expansion draft.

Is Suter healthy enough.and useful enough to replace Gio when Seattle takes him?

Edit: a quick glance says yes. No goal scoring but he'd be a stout defender to cover say a Rasmus Andersson to open up a little. A 2x2 contract?

Woof.. that's a lot of dead cap space..

It does free up two protection slots now, but I was not expecting this.

The cap relief aside, why wouldn't Minnesota just expose Suter/Parise if they held on to them?

Also, was this necessary before the expansion draft? I'm honestly just a bit lost on the details if that matters here or not.

Both Parise and Suter had NMCs which required them to be protected in the expansion draft

I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but I would be interested in Parise on a cheaper deal. I could also see him going to the Islanders or even back to the Devils

I wonder if both refused to waive their NMCs.

Well, Suter is not what he used to be but he's a lot better than Keith at this point.
And I doubt he gets anywhere near 5.5 mill on the open market.

Werent they both signed as free agents at the same time too? Kinda funny how things come around.

Suter is overpaid but my impression was that he is still a half decent defenseman. He probably doesn’t want to leave the U.S., but if Gio were to be selected, I wonder if Treliving might consider him as a potential replacement. On a cheap deal, it might be a decent risk.

Both are past their prime, but both could be a decent veteran addition to a contender at a low cost.

I recall the fanfare of these signings at the time but really these signings didn't lead to any success in regards to winning a cup. Now the Wild are saddled with paying them a lot of money not to play for them and some major cap hits.

Those 6M and 7M dead cap years in a couple years will be tough. Cap might be going up by then, so there is a silver lining. Also get to keep Dumba, which I think is the goal here.

I'm personally a big fan of Suter's game. I would definitely be happy to see him on the Flames, especially if Gio is taken by Seattle or the Flames trade Hanifin/Valimaki for a young stud forward.

This was the price of the first 8 years of those contracts. They benefited from them for a long time at a lower cap hit than they would have gotten on a shorter term contract. Now it's time to pay the piper. They were banking on having their run while they had these stars in their prime and now that they are older, as expected, it's going to be a few tough years.
