Really nice deal. Ek took a huge step forward last year and was already pretty good. Only 24.

Whoa. Thats a hefty investment. The cap isn't bad as long as he's trending the same from this past season or upwards. But if last season was a one off, yeesh.

If he continues to get better, it could be steal.
If he stays the same, it's about market rate.
If he regresses back to his pre-2020 form, it could be a doozy.
I think it'll be fine, if not pretty good. I kind of like it when teams have the guts to commit max length to non-superstars like this.

Yup. They're gambling that he'll continue to improve both in his production and being a two-way, regularly nominated for Selke guy, but if I had to predict, I'd say that Minnesota will wish they signed him for something shorter.

I'd love to have one very productive year set me up for life.
Pretty good player though.

He's an excellent two way centre who had decent offensive stats on an offensively deficient team.
This is a spectacular contract.

This is one of those 'future' contracts that looks like overpayment now, but will possibly pan out as good value shortly. Risky, but Eriksson is a solid player.
Can't forget the Swede factor either.

Not even really an overpayment now.
He had a prorated 46 points while being great defensively last season and is only 24 years old. I’d pay $5.25M for that.
But his underlying numbers have shown he should probably produce even more than he has the last two seasons, so lots of upside here for sure.

Relative to the nuge contract I actually think this is a bad deal for Minnesota.

Reminds me of Couturier's current deal when he signed it. Good value that can turn into a steal.

Finished fourth in Selke voting this year. As long as he doesn't take a step back, this is a good deal for Minnesota with the potential to be a steal. Guy needs a new agent.

Nugent-Hopkins isn't gonna get better in the next 8 years. This guy will.

Eriksson Ek was their number one C through the year, scoring almost 100% of his points even strength. RNH was a sometimes 3C, sometimes complimentary winger to McD or Draisaitl. Sometimes 2C when they put those guys together, and scored most of his points on the PP, from the two top guys.

Plus it only pays him a couple years past 30.

I can’t believe you have said this.
I couldn’t disagree more.
You will get Ek’s best 8 years, vs.Nuge’s declining years.
This will be a steal, and if it’s not obvious today (and it is), it will be by the middle of next year.

I’m sure the agent explained the risks/rewards to the player.
Ek is now guaranteed life time security at a very high level. He doesn’t have to wait 3 years to get his big contract and potentially derail his career with a serious injury. Sure, he potentially gives up millions of dollars, but that’s the nature of buying insurance.
