Default 24/25 cap space

After the Markstrom trade, The Flames have over 23m in cap space. What do you think they should do with that space?

PROJECTED CAP HIT : $64,800,833
PROJECTED LTIR USED : $0
PROJECTED CAP SPACE : $23,199,167

ROSTER SIZE: 19/23
CONTRACTS: 33/50
RESERVE LIST: 50/90

According to CapFriendly - https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/flames

What I think they should do:

- Sign UFAs to 1 or 2 year deals so you can flip them at the deadline.

- Take on salary/"bad contracts" in trades, with the plan to retain when you trade them at the deadline for more than they cost you.

What I think they will do:

- Offer 7yr deals to a couple of 28-30yr olds, and overpay to get them to come here.

Take on short/medium term bad money (with thank you assets) or short term deals on decent players to flip.

Assuming Coronato comes up, and Kylington + Wolf at about $6M combined. That gives you 22 bodies at $71.75M. With a few guys who should have to fight in training camp to stay up.

The Flames are going into free agency somewhere between;

$16.25M for 1F
$18.6M for 2F + 2D

I'll echo others, if they guys are open to playing in a leadership role without really getting the chance to win, I wouldn't mind trying to re-acquire Monahan and Tanev. But I feel like they'll find better offers elsewhere.

I also wouldn't mind them waiting 2-3 weeks and seeing if there are any reclamation projects around 29 years old, who can't get the contract that they want and are willing to sign 1-2 years. Give yourself the opportunity to have marketable assets in one of the next two trade deadlines, and guys who can stop the team from going into pathetic Edmonton mode.

It would be nice to see a couple young players get a look in the depth forward roles, so I hope that if they do use the cap space to sign guys like Debrusk or Mantha it means that players like Mangi and Coleman are moved for picks

I hope we take cap anchors from strapped teams for A prospects (e.g. Kulich, Savoie, Bourque, Cowan, etc.)

Flames need to shuffle the FW ranks a bit now. Add more depth. If their objective is the playoffs, they need to bump the skill up all the way through the 4 FW lines.

Pitter patter Conny, time to see what's next on the plan list.

Why do they need to do that? With Skinner they have just as much cap space as we do.

I wouldn’t sign anyone for more then 2 years to maximize open cap space in two years where you can then go big game hunting

Instead I’m sure they will sign enough middle of the lineup guys for 4-5 years that we don’t have cap Flexibility going forward and maybe are just good enough to finish 11th and lose our pick .

But at least we wouldn’t create a Losing culture

There's absolutely no way that Martinez gets more than a 2 year deal. I also doubt he makes more than $2.5M. it would be a silly signing IMO.

I hope the Flames sign Duclair to a shorter term, and stay away from Stephenson altogether.

Duchene strikes me as a future Flame. 3 x $7.5M.

I'm hoping they weaponize this space. Take on some "bad" expiring contracts for picks (like the monahan trade) , maybe flip a few of those players at the TDL, get more picks, more assets.

Are we starting a new 2024 cap space thread every time the projected cap space changes now?

As said in the other threads about this, try to weaponize the cap space. Absorb bad contracts for picks. Maybe sign a defenceman. The end.
