the worst-kept secret in the CFL. A back door deal done to help the Eskies win the Cup. Lot's of people whining about this one. They should direct their disdain to the commisioner's office for letting stuff like this go.

I agree with habby on this one. It's very frustrating, knowing the league has no rules implemented to prevent this sort of thing. Something has to be done, and the CFL is viewed as non-professional by many for reasons such as this.
If there were rules in to prevent this, the Eskimos would not have won a single playoff game, much less the Grey Cup. Something has to be done or from my perspective, I probably won't renew season tickets.

Until the commish is granted some real power in the league there's no point in even doing that. The league is run by the haves of the team (which includes Calgary) at the expense of the have nots.
Junk like this is precisely the reason I am now a "casual" CFL fan after being die-hard for a very long time. Real leagues don't allow this crap.

The league needs to grow some balls and stop this sort of thing from happening. It's BS in my opinion.
"Hey, we'll give you a couple no-names, you give us your star runningback so we have a better shot at winning the Cup. Then, after the season we'll send over Maas just to make things fair, but not right away cause we might need his help in the playoffs".

What makes you so certain the Esk's wouldn't have won 1 playoff game, let alone the Grey Cup? Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Um maybe because against Calgary they only started doing anything when Maas came in.

Well, when the hierarchy of the CFL front office looks something like this:
Hugh Campbell
Big market owners
Tom Wright
you know there's problems.
And "amazing_oilers", without Maas in the lineup the Esks probably don't beat Calgary or BC. Maas was essentially a Ticat for the last few weeks of the regular season and playoffs, but somehow was playing for the Eskimos. And for the league office to come out and say they reviewed the trades and found no evidence the Maas deal had anything to do with future considerations in the Troy Davis deal is downright laughable.

I'm sure if they couldn't get away with it, they would just waited until after the season (like they actually did) to trade Maas.

Lets not demote ourselves to lowly Vancouver fans and assume the What ifs.
It might have been the difference, but who knows.
However, it was a pretty underhanded Bush league trade. Maas should have been dealt the day of the Troy Davis deal, none of this Gentleman's handshake kind of crap.

Ted Mentioned that the NFL was consulted on this issue and indicated that they would NOT allow this sort of trade to occur. You can trade for future considerations but they have to be draft eligible players not players on your roster.
If you dont have an independant commishiner with authority to act or penalize teams that abuse the rules - then his approval of the trades is in point of fact completly irrelevant.

^^^Exactly Eddie. Any reputable pro sport has rules to prohibit this. In MLB you see "a player to be named later" all the time - but its never a guy on the active roster.
If the CFL could just sort out their front office and how they run the league they would be that much better. But make no mistake - bush league junk like this DOES have an impact on fan loyalty.

It should also be noted that just last week, the Esks signed Maas to a brand new 1+1 contract worth an estimated 300k. That's very nice of the Esks to take the time and do the Ti-Cats contract negotiations for them.

Ok, I am a die hard Flames/Esks fan, but the esks are run like a gong show. Garden-gnome was left out to dry in an attempt to lose to promote Campbell's son to coach.
To think that guy is the d-coord is a joke.
The league is actually run more by the BC guy than anyone.
I completely agree this was a joke move and without Maas the esks have aboslutly no heart at all. If they would have simply got a descent O line for Maas the Esks would have won 2 years ago.
