Icon33 For the first time in 112 years, the Canadiens will play without a Quebec-born player

https://twitter.com/user/status/1390549643482865666

Translated and paraphrased: if Philip Danault doesn't play today, it'll be the first time since the Canadiens were formed in 1909 the team will play without a single Quebecois player.

Danault's absence has been confirmed for this game, meaning this will become reality. (Drouin is currently injured)

Insane stat. 112 years in the making.

Times change, I don't think the Flames have had a Quebecois player for about 5 or 6 years years and it's been awhile since we had an Alberta boy.

Cool streak, although I think the home-grown factor with the Habs is a bit much today given that they're the only team that really seems to care about having that representation internally. Maybe it matters because of the streak?

Their inclination to acquire players with French surnames, even when they don't know a lick of French is also kind of funny, like back when they picked up Rene Bourque and he wasn't what they were expecting at the first media availability.

I guess it makes sense. But I don't care that most of the Flames is made up of Swedes and Americans. Still just as much a Calgary team.

The QCers are a proud bunch, that's for sure.

It's not too surprising - Quebec has really fallen off the map in terms of producing hockey players.

Here are the provinces by the percentage of their population that are NHLers:
PEI: 0.0025%
Manitoba: 0.0022%
Saskatchewan: 0.0023%
Ontario: 0.0013%
Alberta: 0.0013%
British Columbia: 0.0009%
Nova Scotia: 0.0008%
Quebec: 0.0007%
Newfoundland and Labrador: 0.0004%
New Brunswick: 0.0003%

So Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and PEI all produce 2-3 times more players. Even Minnesota produces more NHLers per capita than Quebec.

The British Columbian players have scored about as many total points as the Quebecer players, despite only have about 60% of the population. So for them, it's quality over quantity.

Even for the draft this year, Zachary Bolduc might be the only Quebec born player drafted in the first round. And he might not go in the top 20.

By the way, I don't think the Flames (including Atlanta) have ever had a roster that didn't include an Albertan-born player. I might be wrong on this.

This sounds like a 3 game pointless streak just waiting to happen.

The bloc will likely bring this up in the house as it underscores the erosion of the québécois heritage and distinct society

I just had flashbacks of Lucien Bouchard and Jacques Parizeau.

Last year - Brandon Davidson, before that, Versteeg, Kulak, Foo, Engelland, Colborne, Russell, Shinkaruk, Raymond.

Of course, Stone played his junior hockey in Calgary and married a Calgary girl.

It looks like the Flames had no Alberta born players in the 2018-2019 season.

Had to look that one up. Turns out it's Noah Dobson and 3 undrafted guys you probably never heard of.

Even if we weren’t in a socially media driven society, where every situation like this is treated by some subsection of people (who then pull others in along with the cause) as some sort of grave injustice or compared to a upper Canada vs lower Canada situation, this situation would be highly politicized previously, and cause heads to roll within the Canadiens.

I love the way you’ve referenced to our journeyman backup (who, guaranteed, 30% of the forum has forgotten is even on the roster) and a guy who’s not from from Alberta as obvious examples that everyone should also immediately know and be incorrect about.

Certainly this requires the Liberals to increase transfer payments to Quebec.

When did Trudeau learn of this scandal and if he didn’t know, why wasn’t he told?

Maybe Calgary has a Quebec player next year, Mr. Pelletier. Philp and Philip are both locals, too.
