wranglers Heat feature on U Sports hockey, Stockton's three alumni, and player development

Hey there. I spent the last few weeks talking to a few people for the purposes of putting together this feature article:

https://flamesnation.ca/2021/04/27/h...r-development/

I wasn't about to cover a pro hockey team for an entire season without putting together a feature.

Two of Stockton's players have come from an incredible UNB system that has helped produce players like Couturier, Landeskog, Garland, and Batherson. It deserves more recognition for what it's brought to professional hockey over the years... over 100 UNB V-Red grads have made it to the AHL. 34, to the NHL.

It's unusual for a team to be so rich in terms of U Sports bloodlines, but it's becoming more of a trend. Stockton's three alumni all have stories worth telling and I hope you enjoy this piece.

Can't thank Brandon Weiss, from Stockton, and Andy Campbell, from UNB, enough for helping me create this.

That's fantastic stuff, Scorp. Thank you for that. I'm involved with European hockey and I can tell you that more and more teams are taking players directly out of USports whereas just a few years ago a player would have to prove himself in the ECHL or AHL before they'd get a look from a good Euro league. UNB in particular is just an amazing factory.

It really is... and not just for players who actually go to the school. I was stunned when I got the list of NHL players that had attended their development camps as kids and teenagers, it's really incredible. Practically an institution.

That's Andy "former voice of the Saint John Flames" Campbell.

Great article, Scorp!

Always thought that university hockey is a very well-kept secret.

No way! I'll have to ask him about that.

Mods, can we move this to the Back Burner section?

I always forget to look in the back burner thread, and don’t think it’s hurting anyone by being in the main forum.

Great article Scorp!

An extremely small fraction of users read the Back Burner section. I put a lot of work into this piece and wanted to share it with more people.

Then what's the point of the back burner thread? It's specifically there for Heat content for people who are interested.

And yet... nobody visits it. Pretty hard to cultivate any interest that way.

Either way, I have no idea why anyone would have any issue with this thread at all. It's not like we're overflowing with content.

Should probably delete the forum then? Guess this discussion could go in the "Help/Suggestions" forum.

Probably just easier to write about more popular things.

Are you not getting enough traffic from flamesnation.com?

I don't get any compensation from FN based on pageviews. I care about traffic in the sense that, I know there are people here who appreciate the stuff I create, and this is the sort of piece I wouldn't want them to miss.

Imagine actually getting in a huff about seeing a thread about prospects and player development... on the main forum. Oh dear, what a crime.

We should have the draft thread in the Back Burner forum too then. Those are all technically Flames prospects and not on the main roster yet.

Why is the Adam Fox and NCAA discussion on the main forum too, Fox was only ever a prospect and the NCAA rule only applies to prospects.

Just a bunch of people making a big deal about nothing just because Scorp is the poster who made the thread. Will never get why this forum feels the need to always criticize a guy who is actually trying to bring decent content to this site.

I rarely ever visit FoI, so I don't really care. It was more just a "that seems out of place" moment for me when I saw it. Be like if someone started an NFL Draft thread in the Off Topic forum. Technically not a big deal, but just kind of jarring.

I also tend to think the Back Burner forum is unnecessary. Is there really that much prospect talk that it gums up FoI? And as noted, the prospect talk makes it way in here anyways.

I mean I get annoyed when people file April production related items in the May production folder - this is no different.
