Default First quarter player achievements- surprises ATL

So we are about a quarter of the way in to the season

Some surprises for me. The first two are guys I expected to develop but maybe are a bit sooner than expected (maybe the bizarre pandemic year distracted from my focus). The next two I was more surprised by

Troy Terry, ANA 22 GP 14-10-24
Jordan Kyrou STL 22 GP 9-14-23
Tony deAngelo CAR 20 GP 4-15-19
Tom Wilson 23 WAS GP 8-15-23

Then you have guys with whom we (as hockey and Flames fans) are familiar

Ovechkin 23 GP 19-18-37
Mangiapane 22 GP 15-2-17

Obviously Kylington is a surprise but stats aren’t too outrageous

What are some of the first quarter season surprise stories for you?

^ Note: Ovechkin has been a scorer around point per game for 8 years or so, and a great goal scorer of course. 1.6 points per game pace is a huge step up, especially at 36

Didn’t think of negative surprises

I always liked Ryan, but if you knowingly choose no good, well…

Or maybe he is doing a yeoman’s work from the inside

Count me as pleasantly surprised that Jack Campbell is finally looking like the goalie he was drafted to be (11th overall in 2010). Better SV% and GAA numbers than Markstrom with two fewer shutouts. Will be interesting to see if he can handle the starter's workload long term. Always love to see goalies break out in their late 20s.

Tarasenko and Kyou out of St Louis would've been nice. But I don't think it was ever a real discussion point.

Unsure whether to reply:

A) Die of the stench?
B) Do you really call that living?

To be fair, Chychrun is the only talent alone on that island of misfit toys in Arizona. He has nobody to pass the puck to, and nobody that can get the puck to him in a good shooting position. Plus, he has to do like 150% of their defending too. Not a great situation for him.

Ryan Getzlaf has 23 points in 20 games.

Cole Caufield has been a dud this year

I don't actually think DeAngelo's production is surprising at all. Devon Toews having 10 points in 10 games is more surprising.

Goodness, talk about cutting bait at the right time. I wanted him to stay, but seeing him now he'd be a healthy scratch in our current lineup.

You could list the stats of the Canadiens as it's been pretty miserable for all of them but Jeff Petry in particular is having a terrible season. He put up 42 points in 55 games last season and so far this season 24GP 0-2-2.

Bobrovsky is a surprise for me. Especially after the last two year, and his playoff performance last years. I thought he would really be an anchor this year, but he has been very solid.

Ovechkin having a career year at 36 in an Olympic year representing Russia...

A lot of the 30+ players having a bit of a resurgence. Ovie, Kopitar, Stamkos, Tavares, Getzlaf.

Bjorkstrand is having a career year after being just a good player. Kreider is on a real tear.
