Default Stabbing Spree in North Vancouver - 6 People in Hospital

I know there's a fair amount of us in the Vancouver area and many with family here, so thought this was worth sharing.

Some guy stabbed at least 6 people in and around the Lynn Valley Library.
6 people taken to hospital & suspect in custody.

Hope there's no serious injuries

Saw a Twitter video of him getting taken down. I think he injured himself on purpose before cops got to him.

I hope everyone is ok. My guess is this was random.

Hearing that one victim has passed away. Haven't read too much about it yet.

If this had happened yesterday, I would have been cycling right through that intersection at about the same time he was taken down.

Horrific stories circulating on social media at the moment. Victims stabbed multiple times, at least one in the face, children witnessing the whole thing...

Lots more information to come out from official sources later this evening and through the weekend I'm sure. Can't say it didn't occur to me what this might have been like if the suspect had a firearm.

What? His delivery was sarcastic, but his point is not unfounded at all.

It's not the right time to talk about gun safety, we are better off to wait for some time in the future when bad things aren't happening......................................... .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .............................

That's pretty much the gist of gun debates. When you can talk about guns "Not when there's a gun incident, that's insensitive", and also "Not when there's not a gun incident, what's the point, everything's okay!".

edit: Although in this case it was a stabbing incident, although AFC's point is relevant.

Yeah but this isn’t a fun debate with politicians or the NRA or right wingers.

It’s a thread about a stabbing in Vancouver, where at least one person has lost their life and many others likely will never live the same way again. Not sure what Gun control debate is occurring here.

If I was flippant my apologies, at the time I posted no deaths had been announced, as to motive from the video of the suspect stabbing himself he appears to be very mentally ill

A woman died, no other details as of yet.
The murderer has a criminal record.

Very sad, I have been at that library location.

The link below shows the suspect in a crosswalk getting arrested.

This one shows the suspect stabbing himself in the leg before getting arrested in the crosswalk.

Or here's an idea. Start a thread and fill your boots. Most want to discuss the tragedy of this actual event rather than jumping on your soapbox.

This is an awful thing that happened with a bad person. He most likely would have found a way to do what he did even if metal was never invented.

not to totally hijack this thread, but something similar nearly happened to us (in what sounds like sort of a similar type episode actually) 5 years ago

we were in London and had just left the theater, I went in search of a few basic groceries for the morning and my wife and kids took the route through Russell Square, we estimate they missed the stabbings by less than 5 minutes

Across the street from one of the stores I run and in the community I call home.

Thankfully all my staff were safe, and so far I haven't talked to anyone who has been directly affected, but Lynn Valley is an incredibly tight community. I am dreading the fact that one of the women passed as she will likely be known in the community and it is heart breaking in a place that is so interconnected.

It was stunning how hard this is to process when it happens so close. At first I just didn't believe it. Then I couldn't process how serious it was. Lynn Valley is not immune to violence, I thought. Then I started getting calls from friends and family asking if I was okay. It went from a stabbing to four people stabbed to six. At this point I packed up my stuff and b-lined for the store. On Thursday I had called the police about young man walking up and down Lynn Valley road talking about how he was going to stab himself or someone else and I was incredibly worried that it was related and I had guilt about not following up with the police. The suspect was not someone I recognized, thankfully, but I definitely understand why some people are such hawks about other people's business if it looks strange or out of place now. I used to sit in judgement of those people and wonder why they can't just mind their own business.

Obviously as any news comes out from the community I will update here, though it will likely mostly be about grieving the woman who passed.

And AFC's point was very relevant. No less than 5 lives were saved because this guy used a knife, terrible event but lucky it wasn't a gun.
