Music Gems
I thought it might be kind of fun for people to list off a couple of bands/musicians that they love that most people won't have heard of. I'm always searching for new and interesting music and this might be a neat way to introduce each other to new music.
I'll start by highly recommending everyone check out anything by Dan Bern. He's a singer-songwriter type of artist whose lyrics are often playful and insightful at once. Check out his albums "New American Language" or "Fleeting Days" and you'll see what I mean.
Another album that has been getting a lot of play in my car recently is "Gimme Fiction" by Spoon. Also highly recommended.
Everyone probably has a favourite artist/band that they consider their own so lets hear em!

Welcome to the board, Kybosh.
One group I highly recommend is Sigur Ros, an enigmatic sounding band from Iceland. Absolutely stunning in every way. They just released a new CD entitled "Takk..." (roughly translated to "thanks") and it's astonishingly beautiful.

I'd highly recommend Dave Soroka. Check out his website at www.davesoroka.com . I particularly recommend his albums Ladies of Summer, Drinking With the Prince of Fade, and Thief of Hearts.

Just bits and pieces.
How about Heavy Trash and Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion.

I've only heard a few songs by the New Pornographers but they definately have a catchy sound. They seem like the kind of band I would consider buying a CD for if I wasn't such a poor student. In the mean time I'll just stick to downloading.

Feist became a part of Broken Social Scene and then did a solo record in 2004 that is critically acclaimed.
I've only heard bits and pieces of all her songs.. she's on Broken Social Scene's record label Arts and Crafts.. http://www.arts-crafts.ca

I've seen her twice. Great stuff. Folksy solo female lead kind of style with some pop and indie influences.

I hate the New Pornographers. Extremely overated IMO, but feel free to disagree.

The newest CD is unreal.
Ron Hawkins is the lead singer, and I hear the Low have semi broke up again, rumor has it Ron is going to put out another solo...

There is a band I haven't looked into in a while.
Anybody here hear of Chris Smither? Saw him playing at a free show in New York City while I was there. Pretty good Blues/Folk musician.

Also, I'll second Troutman on Wolf Parade: love their album.
The Engineers were a big discovery for me this year--great British rock band focusing on mellow, lush, gorgeous stoner songs. Definitely one of my favorite albums of the year, along with the latest by Okkervil River.
