Given their expensive contracts and ages, some players - such as Milan Lucic, Brent Seabrook, Zach Parise and Erik Johnson - are expected to be asked based on their unlikeliness of being claimed by Seattle. Others may be convinced for the good of the future of their team.
But they are under no obligation to waive, having earned the clause.
But today is the first day that teams could begin asking players to waive their NMC for the expansion draft.

Honestly if I was Treliving I would be asking what amount of draft picks in another deal it would take for them to take Lucic. Have to leave all stones unturned and see if there's an opportunity to rid the team of that contract.

The team's best (and probably only) chance of getting rid of that contract is to convince Lucic to go on LTIRetirement for his back issues.
There’s almost no downside for Lucic if he waives. He looks like a good guy (which he is), almost no chance he gets taken, and even if he does, it’s close to home, on a no-pressure team.

If he waives it, is it immediate or is it only for the purpose of the expansion draft?
I ask because than we can taxi squad him too.
I am wondering about the same thing. If a player waives his NTC, NMC, etc, is it a 1-time event and the clause will be active again after the expansion draft or trade, or is the clause gone for the rest of the contract?
I guess I have figured this out. Lucic waived his NMC to get traded from Edmonton to Calgary, but the NMC is back on right now. So I suppose the clause is always active for the duration of the contract and players can waive it for 1-time events...

When they were doing their web calls with STH during the year last year, this was a regular question for Treliving. And tre repeatedly answered saying that this shouldn’t be an issue for the expansion draft.

I’m sure Lucic waives for the expansion draft but with the understanding that they don’t actively try to move him by giving Seattle additional picks.
