Default NHL nixes first batch of tracking pucks...may take a while to start back up.

This was never a good idea IMO but they may get there eventually.

The NHL announced that it will stop using pucks with imbedded tracking technology for the foreseeable future due to complaints about their performance during the start of the 2021 season.

The change is effective beginning with Tuesday night's games.

The NHL reviewed the first supply of tracking pucks that it has been using and determined that they did not receive "the same precise finishing treatments during the offseason manufacturing process as were used during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs."

One NHL player told ESPN on Tuesday that the pucks were "terrible" and "don't slide," adding that players had voiced their displeasure with them

I'm going to be honest, I don't give a #### how hard various shots were, and definitely don't care to see the velocity shown during the broadcasts.

Especially because it just gives me more work when pulling clips as I have to animate my superimposed scoreclock logos.

I think the biggest advantage of a tracked puck is goal assuredness and potentially offside assuredness.

Although I do think it'd be cool to see velocities, both player with the puck and shots.

I really noticed this in the Winnipeg game. There were many times that players from both teams overskated the puck expecting it to slide along the ice. Also, those two plays where Markstrom was expecting the puck to come to him behind the net and they got hung up in the corner were weird to watch. His anticipation of those was very far off from what actually happened.

I think the puck and player tracking is going to be used for online betting soon.

My guess is they implement the pucks back in secretly. I'm sure the early complaintants were from then teams with losing records and fully suspect the Oilers were leading the charge in sniveling to the league.

On another note, the tracking devices in the players jerseys are much more noticeable then I thought/remember up on the shoulders.
