I think he'll replace Nordstrom tomorrow and in the opening day lineup. I think Nordstrom will be the 13th F. Ryan is too much better than Nordstrom to sit so Nordstrom can play.

I really like Ryan, so this isn't meant to find joy in his decline in prominence, but he is a very good player and if Treliving was able to find three players in (Leivo, Simon, and Nordstrom) for cheap deals who are able to replace him while the Flames accrue cap savings leading up to the trade deadline then great work.

On the other hand, they know what they have in Ryan, so the coaches could very well be taking this last opportunity to see how the new guys and young guys like Dube fit in different combinations.

Derek Ryan wins faceoffs and does very little else at ~2mil above replacement level.

He is just a guy and you can find a whole bunch of "just a guys" at league minimum.

sit him on the taxi squad and watch that cap space increase.

That makes a lot of sense. Of all the different moving parts right now, Ryan is the easiest to move up and down the lineup, put on the wing, or put in the pressbox without causing too much disruption. Better to experiment now versus when the games actually matter.
