Benefits of being in the Scotiabank (Canadian) Division
The Flames have a reputation for having first round exits. However, the Flames have won the opening series a total of 8 times (9 if you include this past year):
2020 versus Winnipeg
2015 versus Vancouver
2004 versus Vancouver
1989 versus Vancouver
1988 versus LA
1986 versus Winnipeg
1984 versus Vancouver
1983 versus Vancouver
1981 versus Chicago
Out of the 9 times the Flames have won the opening series, 7 of them were against Canadian teams.
Here is a list of all the opening round series (including play-in) against Canadian teams:
2020 win against Winnipeg
2015 win against Vancouver
2004 win against Vancouver
1994 lost against Vancouver
1991 loss against Edmonton
1989 win against Vancouver
1987 loss against Winnipeg
1986 win against Winnipeg
1985 loss against Winnipeg
1984 win against Vancouver
1983 win against Vancouver
1982 loss against Vancouver
The all-time record versus Canadian teams is 7-5. Pretty good, but wait until you compare it to the American series.
Here is a list of all the first round series against American teams:
2020 loss against Dallas
2019 loss against Colorado
2017 loss against Anaheim
2009 loss against Chicago
2008 loss against San Jose
2007 loss against Detroit
2006 loss against Anaheim
1996 loss against Chicago
1995 loss against San Jose
1993 loss against LA
1990 loss against LA
1988 win against LA
1981 win against Chicago
The all-time record versus American teams is 2-11. 11 losses in a row. The Flames haven't beaten an American team in the opening round since 1988.
Historically speaking, the Flames' chances of making it past the opening/first round are much higher when it's against Canadian teams (especially Vancouver).
It's pretty likely that the Flames would face Vancouver or Winnipeg in the playoffs yet again. And this favors the Flames quite a bit.

With all the Canadian teams in this division you can be sure the interest rate will be very high.

If you look at the cheques and balances, all teams would profit from playing more games against divisional rivals. The interest rates from fans would be much higher and the investment would pay off with a dividend of a highly charged atmosphere.
The hatred between teams would increase with penalties being doled out for late charges against on another.
The goalie that saves and the player the cheques will help their team bank wins in an effort to cash out at the end of the season with a Stanley Cup victory.

I'd far rather watch games against Montreal and Toronto than against Minnesota, Columbus, Florida, Anaheim, Nashville, Arizona and so many of those faceless US clubs.
The Flames games against Edmonton and Vancouver have already been good the past few years. Winnipeg has established a bit of a rivalry during the playin round.
Ottawa doesn't offer a lot yet, but that will change.

No offense to the teams in question, but games against the Coyotes, Wild, Wings, Sabres and Panthers are about as drab and menial as they come.
The players just run on autopilot until crunch time.
With the odd exception every few years, like the Wild hacking Gaudreau's wrists that one game and the bench brawling blowout in Detroit.

Remember though, nashville games give us the best between the legs OT snipes from Tkachuk so they aren't entirely useless. If he starts doing that against the no goods every game then nashville can stay entirely irrelevant

The Tkachuk boys running around gives that game some degree of watchability.

I am curious on how this season will be officiated, with the mini like series and shortened season. With the borders closed you will be seeing a lot of the same refs.

I agree about the passionless and dull encounters - especially against the sunbelt teams, but I can't dump Nashville in amongst them. I love the games against the Predators. Especially in Nashville. Their fans are superb.

I'm just happy that there won't be any fans in the stands when Toronto and Montreal come to town. At least it'll feel like a neutral site game rather than a road one.

Didnt know where else to drop this.....SN personalities give their predictions on who wins the Canadian/North/Scotiabank/Smythe division.
Lots of love for the Leafs and Flames.

Panthers
Stars
Preds
Coyotes
Lightning
Hurricanes
Golden Knights
ever ever again!

So...
TOR: 11 - 55%
CGY: 6 - 30%
EDM: 2 - 10%
MTL: 1 - 5%
Sounds about right for handicapping

Mark Specter: I don't want to say EDM and look like a homer (even though I think it's EDM), so I will say MTL in order to try and be the smartest person in the room.
Also, Eric Francis said Calgary... wat?
