Icon26 CBJ sign Bjorkstrand to extension (5 yrs, $5.4mil AAV)

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Oliver Bjorkstrand's five-year extension with #CBJ carries a $5.4M AAV.

Wonder if Dubois will be at all miffed that Bjork got more AAV than him. Granted they got more years but I wonder if he's growing an ego.

Yeesh...I don't get that contract. Good player, but that AAV during a downturn in the economic health of the league, just seems like a bad idea. Term is good, captured his prime years.

That is kind of the going rate in today's NHL; especially for a player still with some upside. It's not 2012 anymore.

Given his production it probably appears to be an overpay, but Bjorkstrand is a very strong play-driver and I suspect CBJ's progressive management identified him as a potential value signing.

My friend is a CBJ fan and she loves Bjorkstrand. I would have liked the flames to sign him.

He’s a guy I would target in any Gaudreau or Monahan trade talks with CBJ.

Seems like a lot but CBJ needs all the scoring they can get. Especially if they end up trading Dubois for futures

With a flat cap for the next 3-5 years this contract will not age well unless his production goes up

Guys, this is the team that has had literally every player worth anything walk away from them. Some teams need to pay a bit of a premium to keep guys. Columbus is near the top of that list.

I remember really wanting the flames to draft this guy. Instead we drafted *checks notes* Keegan Kanzig.

36 points in 49 games is well about 0.5 ppg.

I think it's a fine deal.

He has a hell of a wrist shot from what I've seen (I'll admit I haven't watched a lot of Columbus hockey).

He's a good player. It seems like a slight overpayment currently, but the key is the term.

Columbus is taking a gamble betting that he will continue to be a 0.5 ppg player or better for the next 5 years. If he does, the tail end of the contract will probably be small bargain . At his age, it's isn't a crazy expectation. At the very worst, I think it might be a slight overpayment, but not an anchor.

I feel Columbus is one or two guys short from really breaking out offensively. Followed them a fair bit the last couple years mostly due to fantasy leagues.

Texier - Dubois - Bjorkstrand --- Texier has some potential, but a winger upgrade there would make huge impact
Foligno/Jenner - Domi - Atkinson --- Feel like this has the makings of a great 1B line

Either adding a C (to bump Domi to the 1st line LW) or LW would help them immensely, maybe they're banking on that happening so felt comfortable with this Bjorkstrand contract.

Though that said, if they lose Dubois without replacing in-kind or upgrading... they're in trouble & this might feel like an overpay until there are some additions to the top 6.
